Items

The build makes use of a staff of ruin. The increased damage was selected over various other implements primarily to increase the damage that our summoned creatures do. The greater the threat from their opportunity attack, the better form of control they represent. However, at level 7, the build switches to a summoner's staff. The increased durability that comes from the temporary hit points granted by the staff's property is well worth the loss of damage.

The build uses flowform armor at heroic tier, but switches to shadowflow armor as soon as possible. The shadowflow armor not only has an untyped bonus to stealth, but also has a nice encounter power that gets better at epic tier.

The build starts out using an amulet of resolution at heroic tier. It has some nice synergy with the flowform armor, but the build picks up an assassin's cloak as soon as possible. Rolling twice for stealth checks really helps you to become hidden and get maximum effectiveness from the unseen dread feat.

Most of the other items are optional, but the items that increase stealth (e.g. boots of stealth, lightstep slippers and greater ring of invisibility) are highly recommended.

Alternatives:

With the birth of the common, uncommon and rare item system, there's lots of room for customization of this build's items based on the availability of items. None of the items are mandatory, but the summoner's staff, shadowflow armor, assassin's cloak and headband of intellect are highly recommended if you can get ahold of them.

The build could very easily use an orb as its primary implement instead of a staff, depending on what magic items you can acquire. Simply change the three staff-related feats (staff expertise, superior implement training (accurate staff) and implement focus (staff))to the corresponding orb ones (orb expertise, superior implement training (accurate orb), and implement focus (orb)). An orb of the peerless artist could be particularly helpful once your wisdom modifier becomes 1 or better.

No matter what game you're playing in, common items should be available, which includes sylvan armor, elven cloak, or boots of stealth for improving your stealth skill.
