I like the hint of "multiclassing" here. Rogues and fighters can opt into at-will spellcasting (cantrips). You can be a tank by choosing the right theme--is the theme fighter-only, or could a mace-cleric take it? Or a wizard?
Encounter and adventure design based on 4e is a Good Thing.
I don't see that fighters who aren't defenders are necessarily directionless unless role adherence is forced. The only mandatory role in 4e was the leader (although defenders were important if you had...

Lots and lots of people love 4E. Actually, much of the modern fan-base for D&D is 4E players.
Lots and lots of people hate 3.5.
You're preferences are not everyone's. Sorry.

So sad to have come across this, but it doesn't surprise me.
I've played many campaigns in various settings, and DMed plenty more all over the place, and had a lot of fun.
But then, several years ago, I discovered Birthright. Much later than when it came out, but Birthright still changed the game for me.
