sounds like the CP system from skills and powers in 2e
      April 27, 2013 7:51 AM PDT
Pondering the direction of skills. I asked myself what skills would I say I possessed in my life. Sadly, I can only think of two exemplary (Carpentry and Performance - day job vs. aspiring actor). My conclusion is this:
*Skills are vague in most cases - Looking at Perform (not a listed SKILL in this iteration as yet), obviously there are many types of performance (Dance, Oration, Acting, Painting, Sculpting, etc.). So it seems to me that a general Skill (ARTISTRY) can represent a sub-skill...

I don't think creature types should have much if any mechanical consequence. I'd rather label creatures with keywords, so special effects can work on them. Hide from Undead needs the game to notate what is an undead creature, and an Amulet of Protection from Vegetables needs you to define what is a plant.
But I don't want dragons inherently having different stats than bears. The complexity of 3e-era monster creation was WAY too high. 4e monster design suffered from divorcing mechanics from...

Much preferred the Origin, Type (Subtype) system from 4E than this.
I understand that, without the core assumptions that 4E had, there would be problems in labeling something as having a Fey origin in a setting without a Feywild, I think this is one thing that the previous edition just plain got right.
Although, when it comes to 5E monsters, I'd be happy just to see the Level and XP value at the TOP of the write-up

All that may be true, but admit it - this direction of D&Dnext is rekindling the flames of hope, and nostalgia is beginning to surface. The perfect mix of old and new (or so we hope).
PS - I love the idea of bounded accuracy, as I feel we are finally going back to role playing rather than knockoffs of video game design bonuses.

I'm a big believer in "Getting to Yes." Present the options, all the options, to the players, and see what they latch onto. Then build a game around what they are playing. If they want to play a Tiefling, don't screw them over for wanting to play the Tiefling. Build a story that will accommodate that choice. If the player WANTS to have risks involved with the racial choice (because those risks could be a roleplaying MINE, like having to wear robes to disguise a devilish appearance), that's...

My campaign is quasi-historical, so I'm constantly saying no to races I haven't already distorted history to accommodate. I don't care one way or another about the frequency designations, because it should vary greatly from setting to setting.

Ok, I have a few problems with this. I agree that if it doesn't feel like D&D then it is a failure, as let's face it D&D is a big enough phenomenon in the gaming world that it can't really be changed (kind of like Star Wars). My problems are that if the mechanics of the past are what worked, then why not used them? To me, fighters were much more creative and fun in 1e/2e than either 3e or 4e, though 4e wasn't too bad, they just felt like any other class with different trappings. My other issue...

OK, now that I have read the article, I am even more convinced this new game is being even more marketing driven then 4e. They are looking for absolute answers to questions that are based upon peronal choices and openions. There is no set level were a campaign ends, that will far from group to group or camapign to campaign. I am currently starting a new camapign (in a Pathfinder/3.5 hybrid system) at 8th to 9th level, becase it fits the design for the campaign. When will it end, when the players...
