It's like asking someone not to think of a pink elephant. 4e rulebooks and adventures are full of emphasis on combat and combat powers. So naturally that's the focus of the game for most players, especially new players. The focus isn't on the imagination, the roleplaying, the story. It's the combat.

Combat isn't so much emphasized as given thorough treatment. It is the area of the game most likely to need a full complement of rules. If you read the books carefully you'll find there is plenty of treatment given to other areas of the game, especially if you read the DM guides, and the Core Rulebooks rather than the Essentials. The Essentials do tend to focus more on the rules. Again, this lowers the bar for entry with the understanding that more experienced players and DMs will go far beyond...

Documentation flow is a drag, but this seems to be a tip of the hat to the monetization of the product. One resource to rule them all would inevitably lead to fewer purchases. I agree with you, but I understand why the difficulty needs to exist to keep the product profitable.

Indeed. Sounds like 5e will take a very modular approach (like GURPS?) so it should be easy to get started, and lot's of add-on possibilities as you progress. I don't mind WotC making money, I'd just like to have a better understanding of how I should spend my money at each stage.
