Characters will have one core class (listed above) for their 1st level class. All characters will have at least one class level. This is their “primary class”. Class options (from Unearthed Arcana, PHB2, etc.) are allowed, as are several other variants and homebrew options, as noted below.
- Archivists have been mistaken for wizards for centuries, but are still very rare.
- Ardents were discovered just over 40 years ago, and are still few enough to have many people question their existence.
- Barbarians may be from nearly anywhere, but their initial skill, feat, weapon, and armor selections must reflect their home culture. They typically follow Iroquois, Mongol, Viking, or Zulu stereotypes. See the DM for details.
- Bards are found across the continent, and have been for centuries.
- Beguilers appeared after the Greyhawk Wars and the opening of the Warmage Academy. There does not seem to be a central spot for learning for these sorcerer variants, and they can be found anywhere. Distinguishing these specialists from standard sorcerers is not possible.
- Binders are exceptionally rare, being persecuted vigorously in nearly every civilized land. However, persistent rumors of their existence remain.
- Clerics may only choose Domains associated with their deity, however almost all deities from the PHB and DDG are allowed. Deities listed elsewhere have had their influence blocked, and clerics worshipping these deities have no clerical abilities.
- Crusaders are a fairly new development that originated in The Pale, but can now also be found in the ranks of militant orders of Heironeous, Pholtus, Wee Jas, and Ao.
- Divine Minds developed in The Pale prior to the Drow Invasion, but some few independent Divine Minds predate these devoted psions. In any case, they are rarely seen, even in The Pale.
- Dragon Shamans are practically unknown of, but could be a new development in the last forty years or so. Most people wouldn’t understand a Dragon Shaman’s occupation, even if there was one around to explain it.
- Dread Necromancers have been misidentified for centuries as either clerics or wizards.
- Druids seem to be in slow decline across the continent, and have been for over 200 years.
- Duskblades are ancient, but only recently have non-elves discovered their secret and spread their existence across the continent. Since about the time the Pact was signed over fifty years ago, the Duskblade (with its cousin, Hexblade) has been ascending.
- Factotems have a long history with the Illumians, but only recently began showing up in other races.
- Favored Souls have been found across the continent for centuries, but are often recorded in histories as clerics.
- Fighters are found across the continent, and have been for centuries.
- Healers are common in both the north and the west, where espousing the wrong religion can get one killed (or worse).
- Hexblades are ancient, but only recently have non-Elves discovered their secret and spread their existence across the continent. Since about the time the Pact was signed over fifty years ago, the Hexblade (with its cousin, Duskblade) has been ascending.
- Knights were almost as common as fighters in certain lands before the Greyhawk Wars, but entire orders were exterminated during and just after the war. Now, Knights are scarce, but the mythology of knighthood and the “noble” causes following the Drow Invasion has helped to replenish their ranks.
- Lurks have long been in the Scarlet Brotherhood’s repertoire, but have only recently been found in a few select independent operators.
- Marshals were almost as common as fighters in certain lands during the Greyhawk Wars, but their numbers have dropped sharply in the last decade as the call of battle has subsided. There is a unique variant of the Marshal available called the * Martial Marshal.
- Monks were the domain of the Scarlet Brotherhood alone until about 250 years ago, when the Ruined Land refugees brought their culture to the west of the continent. It is possible that the Ancient Suel acquired this class from Shin-Tao lands, but leaves many questions.
- Ninja are rarely known of, and are usually viewed as assassins or spies. The Clan Asati has had ninjas since its inception nearly 250 years ago, and they existed prior to that only in Shin-Tao lands.
- Paladins are holy knights whose numbers have declined in the last decade, due in large part to the uneasy peace that seems to have spread throughout the west. In the east, they tend to meet grisly endings at the hands of the evil nations’ forces. They must be Lawful Good, but may worship deities of differing alignment with DMs approval. The Paladin class has several changes made to it summarized here.
- Paragons exemplify the qualities of their race, though are limited to those found in Unearthed Arcana.
- Psions have existed across the continent for centuries, though they have always seemed to be concentrated in the largest cities of the East and Central nations.
- Psychic Warriors were in force during the Greyhawk Wars and Drow Invasion, and have earned a measure of respect, but are even less frequently seen than Psions.
- Rangers are found across the continent, and have been for centuries. There is a unique Martial/Initiator variation of the Ranger available called the Martial Ranger.
- Rogues are found across the continent, and have been for centuries.
- Samurai are unchanged from the Complete Warrior. Samurai are exceptionally rare anywhere but the Far West. There were few liege lords among the refugees, and the Samurai class is dying out in the Flanaess. However, in Lu Shin and the Celestial Union, Samurai are still commonplace.
- Scouts are a fairly new concept, and have only developed after the Greyhawk Wars brought skirmishers into the forefront of warfare over 50 years ago. They tend to be from Nyrond, drawing inspiration from an old Almorian commander’s legendary charge.
- Shadowcasters are solitary individuals, but history has made record of a few Shadowcasters (usually with evil connotations).
- Shugenja are found in a few temples in the Far West, though their influence there is almost completely gone, being replaced by clerics and favored souls. Lu Shin and the Celestial Union still produce shugenja in huge numbers.
- Sorcerers are found across the continent, and have been for centuries. There are several unique Sorcerer variants available.
- Soul Knife is a new development out of the Scarlet Brotherhood, though like other new classes this one has also “leaked” out. Few independent operators exist, and they are usually treated no better than Brotherhood spies.
- Spellthief is a new development in Greyhawk, and their growth may somehow be connected to the arch-mage assassinations of forty years ago. They were thought to be behind the assassinations at first, but now are seen as a simple solution to avoiding an early grave.
- Spirit Shamans strangely disappeared about 250 years ago, roughly coinciding with the destruction of Shin-Tao. Even in Lu Shin, they have become increasingly rare.
- Swashbucklers have existed on the seas of the continent for centuries, but many more have appeared inland since the Greyhawk Wars.
- Swordsages have spread quickly across the Flanaess since being discovered over 50 years ago in the Baklunish lands.
- Truenamers are thought to be extinct, as most of them perished before the Flight of Fiends. Truename magic still exists, and a rare Truenamer may still show up someday.
- Warblades have been part of the Dwarven culture for centuries, but the last few decades have seen a number of non-Dwarves with warblade training emerge, presumably from Dwarven trainers. Of course, they are commonplace in Lu Shin lands.
- Warlocks are another new development, possibly tied in with the arch-mage assassinations.
- Warmages, like the Scout, developed during the Greyhawk Wars, though none graduated before the Pact was signed. Now, there are a few warmage academies across the land, but attendance is in decline.
- Wilders appeared as suddenly as the Spirit Shamans disappeared, prompting some to search for a connection between the two events.
- Wizards are found across the continent, and have been for centuries.
- Wu Jen are unchanged from the Complete Arcane, but must come from a Shin-based culture. They are uncommon in the far west, exceptionally rare in the rest of the Flanaess, and common in Lu Shin lands.
Except as noted above, multiclassing is allowed. Some don’t make sense from MY point of view, but if you can justify a Samurai/Paladin, we’ll probably go with it.
