How about a system for creating and running your own stronghold, tower, church, thieves' guild? Maybe establish your own domain out in the wilderness?
      June 17, 2013 5:42 PM PDT
My concern with this, as will all similar role-play situations like this in past editions, is having decent guidelines for how much various activities cost. How much do you pay a person to search for information for you. How much do you earn playing your lute at the local tavern. That kind of thing.

Such a cool video. Definitely makes me want to play.

This looks good. And since I let my WOW account expire this month, good timing. But why, oh why, are we seeing again another video game only developed for Windows?! No Mac support again? I will try it on Parallels, but still...not the best solution.
And it is good to see something release that even somewhat supports 4E, since WotC dropped support over a year ago.

I don't think so, a lot of 4E is making its way into Next. Sure the powers system is going away, but healing, tiers, some of the skills system, encounter building, and more are all very influential in the Next design.

I was going to make a comment about my disappointment in the lack of any 4E support for so long now and my group's lack of interest in D&D Next, but gladly it looks like so many of you have already stated this clearly. Do Mearls and the others read these comments like they read the D&D Next ones?

Pondering the direction of skills. I asked myself what skills would I say I possessed in my life. Sadly, I can only think of two exemplary (Carpentry and Performance - day job vs. aspiring actor). My conclusion is this:
*Skills are vague in most cases - Looking at Perform (not a listed SKILL in this iteration as yet), obviously there are many types of performance (Dance, Oration, Acting, Painting, Sculpting, etc.). So it seems to me that a general Skill (ARTISTRY) can represent a sub-skill...

I've come to hate feats. They have this annoying tendency to 'bloat'. The worst kind are the ones granting fiddly conditional bonuses. Just replace all of them by templates that grant a set of abilities that work well together. THis also eliminates the need for system mastery, another thing I've come to dislike.

Svirfneblin, Gnome, and Tinker Gnome are separate races in the same way that Elf, Eladrin, and Drow are separate races, as opposed to how Draconians, Dragonbreath Dragonborn, and Dragonfear Dragonborn are the same race.
They may be closely related and all types of Gnomes, but like the Elf family, they're sufficiently different enough to justify different ability scores and a completely separate race write-up. I don't like the fact that the race as two words in its name however – but...

I disagree. By making a separate race, what would be good mechanics become bad ones.

Because I don't want to see this column go, I'm going to be selfish and ask you to write another couple entries.
We have learned a bunch about Iomandra, but I'm extremely curious about the type of campaign you are considering running next. Therefore, I would really appreciate you giving us some insight into the themes that are getting you excited for the next go around.
I think this would be the perfect "intermission" for you column, as I refuse to believe you have run out of topics...

I have few words that can do my thoughts justice, but I'd like to try. Very simply, Dungeon Mastering is the reason I can feel "okay" in this place, and your words are the reason I am a Dungeon Master. I don't think I can ever thank you enough for that.
      Appreciated.

Like: Managing dead level by making not so dead. I believe there are multiple ways in the standard version to ensure a character get more than HP increase at a level up. Maybe in the simpler version this is more an issue, but it comes with the reduced system. Maybe you could think of a way to reduce the levels instead. A level 5 in the simple version could be equivalent to a level 10 in the standard version.
Like: Simpler spells. If a spell would create a fog, everyone would expect the fog...

The first two, yes (not as many HP for high-level monsters but the bottom of that curve has to start higher).

I like being creative. I am even a fan of some "over the top" concepts. However, just like in a movie, special effects can be overdone; likewise, special effects can't always compensate for a bad movie. One of the main reasons I cannot take modern horror movies seriously is because they too often spray gore and blood around and hope the audience won't notice that the movie is terrible. In contrast, I don't believe Hitchcock ever actually showed a person being murdered in his movies; yet,...

Quite literally all of those have happened in my groups campaigns... Probably the most over the top thing that has happened was a character in a campaign became the avatar of Olidammara, after being given a deck of chaos which was used to choose which of the party members would ultimately be the champion. The characters then meet this character again some years later in the next campaign and find that the character has transported to the Dark Sun campaign setting where he then split in 5 parts...

All that may be true, but admit it - this direction of D&Dnext is rekindling the flames of hope, and nostalgia is beginning to surface. The perfect mix of old and new (or so we hope).
PS - I love the idea of bounded accuracy, as I feel we are finally going back to role playing rather than knockoffs of video game design bonuses.

...halflings should return to their origins -hobbits- if we want that the power-of-the-genre-archetypes concept which D&D is based upon since it came to life spread its magic; it seems they do so and I'm very happy!

I agree, though it does annoy me that Paladins have to be lawful good. This is the only class that is restricted to good as their alignment, and I have always felt that a paladin could be lawful neutral or lawful evil instead, though the class description may take a little modification.

I think each class having the maneuver mechanic should have a different die size equal to the size of his hit dice: example, the fighter should have 6 d10 expert dice at high levels, when the monk has 6 d8 and the rogue 6d6.
Also, on the subject of weapon choices, every characters had time only to learn two (2) weapons in the list given to his class, except for the fighter, who his better trained with weapons, who learns how to use two groups of similar weapons. His damage with such a...

To clarify, there is no difference between background and profession. More skills are needed, but profession is a category which helps define the character's skills. A woodcutter, for example, would be recommended to have the skills Climb, Drive, Gather Information, Plants Knowledge and Use Rope, while the ability of a woodcutter to fell trees would be described narratively, without specifying restrictive limits such as how long it takes or how much damage a falling tree would do. A character...

Maybe have x non-combat cantrips given free, so people can still choose?

Because the trope its generally trying to cater to is not a generic 'Protection' effect. Protection from Good/Evil/Neutrality was actually more of a Protection from the Supernatural effect. It generally didn't and never would affect non-magical beings, no matter what their alignment even in the 1e D&D game. Extraplanar creatures were effected, and they were classified by their alignments generally, because in 1e, among other things, there were distinct alignment planes of existence that...

I'm so happy to see Chris, Wil, Scott, Mike and Jerry back but it also confirms how crappy Next is.
Thankfully the players - and DM - are really personable because the game itself is rather boring. Look at Jim Darkmagic: he's gone from being really interesting mechanically to a one-trick pony. Wil's character has gone from tossing out rerolls to a character that has to go back to a basic attack to do anything. Who would believe an oath of enmity now takes an entire minute to come into...

Sudden Death was Awesome. I've spent the last 4-5 days (since last Wednesday) looking up the Article Archives for the next instalment of the DM Experience. Hope to see it soon, your stories and tips are just awesome.
If not for being inspired by your Column, I would never have taken the step to become a DM.
