Hi Everyone -
I am going to be playing in an upcoming tournament w/ a 200 point build for each side. i am kind of new to this game and am overwhelmed a bit with the choices. I have the majority of sets 1-4 and am not sure what to use. I know i want atleast 1 battleship, no subs and lots of air. any suggestions for specifics? i am less worried about allies but more so about axis. no restrictions on selections

I try to put at least one sub in every fleet, either they can hunt other subs or soak up some ASW attacks from units that would sink your ships. Nothing better than watching those 14 point Avengers and Jill's chasing your submarines. But I'll skip them anyways
Here's a fleet you might like:
USS Massachessets 56 USS Saratoga 26 USS San Francisco 16 USS Phelps 10 USS Hoel 9 USS Laffey 9 Catalina 7 Avenger x2 24 Helldiver x1 14 Hellcat x2 20 B-25H Mitchell x1 9
200 points, use the Saratoga as a heavy cruiser to take objectives but beware of battleships guns and torpedoes, pair her up with Hoel and don't forget to use the smoke screen. Remember to pair Phelps with San Fran to use Establish Screen, both of these ships give initiative bonuses. The Catalina will enhance the range 1 attack on the B-25H, not to mention your other aircraft's range 0 attack, after that it can help bomb on turn 3. Hellcats should tear apart most opposition.
Nagato 48 Akagi 27 Yahagi 14 Shigure 12 Suzuya 19 Muresame 10 Judy 12 Jill x2 28 H8K Emily 10 N1K George 11 A6M2 Zeke 6 Kamikaze Zero 3
I think this one is pretty straight forward

Be sure to pair off the Lucia Tarigo with a Pegaso to give smoke cover.

it would be a random tournament, i could be either side. I am super worried about fighting allies - specifially USA because the battleships are crazy good as well as supporting cruisers. the axis ships just don't measure up to the US in quality. i guess that's why they lost

Ach!I believe the winning thing has more to do with "numbers" ... BTW "in game" the US runs a nice advantage on air assets, but this can be overcome with the right build. Japanese = Long Lance Swarm (+subs?) Germany = Kondors over the fleet, Wolfpacks and a Bf 109 air defence Italy = massive luck
...,... and Rock'n Roll - but Minis are fun too...

If making an Italian build do not choose any flag units and use smoke units. You can fire then use smoke to get a 5 or 6 concelment roll.

I don't see why you'd leave flag untis out to use smoke screen. If your opponent wins initiative then they can choose who moves first, thus, if they figure out your strategy, then they can choose to go first.

That's a house-rule : if you're following the official rules, the player winning the initiative goes second.
