This was an idea I had a long while ago, and it was a way to upgrade and customize ships, aircraft and submarines. Basically, these would look like the soldier peices from the Axis and Allies Land game, maybe a little bigger, but be geneically named and have no specific nation. The flavor text on the back, though, might talk about the specific person or crew the miniature is based off of.

For instance, a Fleet Admiral would provide a Flag 2 if placed on a ship. But I would hope it would be a bit more complicated than that. That fleet admiral should also have text saying it can only be based on a carrier, battleship or cruiser, or maybe even only a Battleship.

Some could give a ship an special ability, like a Veteran Damage Control Team could provide the ship with the Damage Control special ability. An Anti-Air Expert could lend a bonus to AA, even if it's only once per game.

Some could even be a trade off, like 0 point "Green Gunners" could allow you to put extra points in your fleet construction, but the ship you put them on gets -1 to it's gun rolls.

I was thinking the limit would be one crew member per hull point.

But another thought was that crew miniatures should be vulnerable to ship damage somehow. I'm not exactly sure how, but that's for a game designer to figure out.

An Ace pilot could provide a bonus to Aircraft (yes, I know carriers do this already, but it's nice to have options for nations without carriers)

Some could also be like shore battery peices via land artillery, or even troop garrisons to block objective control from adjacent islands and/or beef up installation defenses from landings.

These would have to be at their own scale though. The idea popped back into my head this morning, just thought I'd see what others think about it.

Sounds like it has potential and would probably have appeal to the old Salts of the game looking for something fresh.

The priceing may get a bit sticky since some crew could have a disproportion affect than others.  If it could be worked out in a rules set properly I love the idea of spending those odd points in a build.

I don't think minis would be a good idea--it would look odd (IMO) to have ships and planes on the table, and then a giant pilot or sailor next to certain units. It would detract from the visual appeal of miniatures.

Now I think having add-on cards (included in boosters as bonuses, say, or in a special card-only packs)  that add some ability or bonus to units as a certain cost could be appealing.

I agree with ericjohn with the acception the mini be used only as a token on the card.  Then again to keep cost down and proffit margins high simply providing a card would be more WOTC "Magic" esque.

Hey a "magicesque" set of cards only would be welcome....

a set of 150-200 cards (collectible) in 9-15 card boosters...

Include -

Commander cards (bonuses special actions) - might be part of crew cards, but with a limit (1 admiral, 2 captains,...)
Condition cards (play a squall to cut LOS to one of your (damaged) units)
Crew cards (bonuses, special actions)
Action Cards - "if you have an "Experienced Damage Control Team" with this ships roll a die and remove one damage from this ship"
Alternate cards for existing ships (G-class for UK - use this with Vassilissa Olga or ZG3 mini) - We could have cards for each Essex-class this way...

should be cheap enough do design the cards - I even would volunteer for a "freelance" team that designs the cards...
...,... and Rock'n Roll - but Minis are fun too...
