Hi, so I just wanted to query if it is legitimate (under DCI  regulations) to have a sanctioned event (in this case a pre-release)  where getting food (not for  free) is compulsory and is part of the cost of the event. See, for  Innistrad prerelease our local organiser wants to charge an extra few  dollars for pre-arranaged food, potentially without giving vegetarians  the choice to a non-vegetarian option, and without the option for "no  food". The organiser said we have the option to "get the food or to not  attend".

One of the other attendees have stated this " ... (is) apparently (because) Wizards is trying to push the availability of food and  drink at these events citing that people often play long events without  nourishment, which leads to health concerns... Then there's rumored to  be some sort of rebate to the organisers for having food at their venue  to encourage this".

Is the above claim true, does Wizards allow for compulsory catering  within the tournament regulations, or is it not governed at all?

If so, are there other limits? i.e. to attend this event you need to pay 20$ for a buffet meal? Seems like if this is the case, it's VERY counter productive for magic in our area [a lot of the community have indicated they are upset with this].

i don't see that as compulsary food, it is just an elevated entry fee
or are they literally shoving food down your throat?

if more people think like you the event will be less attended and they will rethink their policy.

Wizards doesn't price-fix prerelases or anything, but this is the first I've heard of them offering incentives to provide food. If you don't want to pay for food, and the organizer doesn't give that option, vote with your feet and go to another store's prerelease.

@RootBreaker: Obviously that is an option, but the next closest store is quite far away (35 minute drive), and this store is our "local" store.

Yes, Enigma256, it is effectively an event entry fee but under the assumption that the cost is increased due to compsulory food. My entire query is just on if this incentive IS supported by Wizards, and if not, if it is regulated. Do organizers have carte blanche on these sorts of matters or not?

I believe TOs can pretty much do whatever they want as far as entry fees.

This board is mostly rules advisors and judges - not tournament organizers. You'd probably have better luck getting answers from them - or wizards customer service.

If he is charging money for food, the local health department might also have an opinion on this.

No, I am not a judge.  That's why I like to quote sources such as the rules that trump judges.

This question would probably get a better answer in the Tournament Organizer forums; I'll just move it there for you now.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

I dunno about you, but I'll drive upwards of 90 minutes for a more favorable prerelease experience. The closest location, at 15 minutes away, I simply refuse to go to.

I'm assuming you're a vegetarian?  Speaking as a vegan, I'd be pretty upset about this if I was forced to pay for food when there wasn't anything for me to eat there.  If the TO wants to increase the fee to cover food costs, I don't think there's much you can do about it.  However, if he is going to do that, he should (morally) make sure there is something there for everyone to eat.  If you're concern is that there will be nothing for you to eat since you are paying for the food anyway, then say something to the TO about it before hand.
