I couldn't reply to hammys extended thread so I made this one.
I won last night's extended daily event and I enjoyed the format so I think I'm going to stick with it. Maybe I enjoyed it because I didn't just win, but I didn't lose a single game. I used the deck all-in red. If you don't know, the idea is that it's an all red deck that tries to pump up its mana properly on turn one or two in order to cast Deus of Calamity or Demigod of Revenge and then beat your opponents face. I learned about this deck just the other night when I was researching extended metagame. I stumbled across Mike Flores' article "Extended '09: Threats and Opportunities" which can be found here www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.a.... It's helpful even though it's a bit outdated. I looked over the decks there and liked all-in red's premise as it seemed to be the least affected by the extended rotation. I also liked that it runs Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon main deck as I noticed a lot of ducks running nonbasic lands in the previous DE. I wasn't just going to copy the deck in that article so I'll put the deck list at the end of the article. Okay, enough blah blah.
Round one: vs Dr_Smrt playing ?
I'm not exactly sure what his deck was because I beat him both times fairly quickly but I remember he started out with Coiling Oracle in the first game. That game I was able to cast a big bully on turn one or two and he didn't have a chance. Game two I got Magus of the Moon out on turn two followed by Thunderblust the next turn which sealed the deal.
Round two: vs Smang playing Dredge
I was a little worried about this matchup as I didn't have anything to deal with my opponent's graveyard. In the end, that didn't matter. I was able to get big threats out early that he couldn't deal with both games and he didn't have much luck dredging his deck. In another matchup I had against dredge, I sided in Volcanic Fallouts that obliterated my opponents zombies before they knew what hit them. So I'm not too worried about fixing the sideboard to combat dredge.
Round three: vs Manabogged playing Tezzeret
I need to give props to tiderunner. I started testing my deck against him and this is the deck he was playing against me. I didn't do very well while I was testing this matchup, but I was lucky enough to get my threats out during the match and beat him before he could get the thopter/sword combo out.
Round four: vs thegenk1818 playing fae
I definitely should not have won the first game. On his second turn he played Secluded Glen revealing Bitterblossom but instead of playing it he suspended two Ancestral Visions. I top decked Blood Moon on my turn and that shut him out as all he had were nonbasic lands. In game two I was able to cast Blood Moon on my first turn and he was again unable to do anything with mountains.
So I think my favorite part of this platform is that there are so many different decks which can all compete. I also played in this morning's event with extremely less success. I won the first round against dredge but lost the next two to the lightning Bolt deck. I have since added a playset of Trinispheres to my sideboard hoping that will be enough to slow the deck down to give me a chance to win. I would have one my second matchup against that deck, but I made a horrible misplay. I cast Seething Song but entered my attack phase before using the mana.
Well I didn't expect to write that much so I hope it's worth it to somebody. Note that this deck list has changed a little since the event I covered.
4 Rite of Flame
4 Chrome Mox
3 Blood Moon
4 Deus of Calamity
1 Mountain
4 Demigod of Revenge
3 Chalice of the Void
4 Thunderblust
4 Desperate Ritual
4 Seething Song
4 Simian Spirit Guide
12 Mountain
3 Magus of the Moon
Sideboard
4 Shattering Spree
3 Tormod's Crypt
4 Trinisphere
4 Volcanic Fallout
I didn't have any Trinisphere or Tormod's Crypt in the deck/sideboard when I entered the events. I also replaced the empty the warrens from the deck in the article with Thunderblusts which I think are better play and it worked out well for me. I don't consider myself a good deck creator so I'm proud of how my additions worked out in my favor.
