Hi David! I have been running a game for my kids for a good six or seven months now. We started with 4E but it quickly became apparent it was too complicated and switched to the much simpler (and free!) old-schoolish Microlite74 system, and have been having a blast with it. My kids (the four that play) range in ages from 6 to 11, and I have often experienced the same stumbling blocks you describe.
My advice would be to let them run off the rails. Granted, this is more difficult with 4E,...

We have been playing 4e with our now 9-yo daughter for 3 years. There is no magic answer for how to play with kids. You have to adjust the game to their level of ability. My daughter is a math whiz, so the mechanics are a breeze for her. Where the game benefits her is in learning cooperation, contributing ideas to the story, and playing in-character. Your point about "traditional retailers" is well taken. I got my then 5 year old daughter interested in D&D because of a visit to a local book shop (I had never been in side a game shop at that time--I bought all my board and card games from on line book retailers--I though game shops were for computer games). They had the D&D 3.5 Basic Game (the yellow box with the blue dragon) on the shelves in their comics and games section. I had played D&D as a teen and in college, but never got...

I do not understand how that anti-D&D propaganda campaign ever gained any ground in your country. A game can't make someone evil or cause them to commit suicide. I think parents who don't want to admit their own culpability in the death of their child are looking for scapegoats. Kids who end up in these suicidal spirals are going to kill themselves whether they play D&D or not.
We find D&D has so many positive aspects for our child, including math skills, cooperation skills,...
