The Fighter: Slayer is something I like and dislike. Mechanically, I like the fighter being able to hit even when he misses. Thematically, I think slayer is a poor fit. My minds eye sees a slayer as someone who hit big and misses big – a complete whiff is a real possibility. Reaper does not add much depth and seems to be just a different name for the same thing. What works better for me is something like Veteran – Your battlefield intelligence allows you to slip a quick punch or elbow against enemies when you miss. As well, I would like to see the fighters surge couched more in thematic terms. I’m also not sure if this kind of ability really belongs. To me, and in previous editions of D&D (for the most part) the fighter was the always on character. He could always trip,

This is my perspective as a Dungeon Master, running the game for a group of four experience D&D players.

  The Rogue: Obviously, Wisdom being keyed to nearly all of the sensory exploration activities was a problem for a character who had average wisdom and had bonuses to skills that use wisdom. Intelligence was of little use, short of disabling traps (which I found myself adding and players choosing to simply take the damage). Of course, with the inherent flexibility that the skill system provides, cases can be made for intelligence or even dexterity to be used for searching or listening, but more often than not it will be wisdom.
