Running For Office

The PCs are trying to get a member of the party, or an NPC, elected to a public office.

Level: PC Level +0 (or as needed)

Complexity: 5 (requires 12 successes before 3 failures).

Primary Skills: Bluff, Diplomacy, History, Insight, Intimidation, Religion.

Bluff (Moderate DC): The PC, like any true politician, lies to gain the favor of the electorate. These lies include misstating his positions on certain issues, and making false promises to the voting public. If the PC is not running for office themselves, these lies are told on behalf of the one they are seeking to get elected. This is good for one success per PC.

If the candidate the PCs are trying to get elected is a member of the party, and that PC fails his Bluff check, that PC suffers a -2 penalty to all Bluff and Diplomacy checks until he earns a success.

Debate: The PC, or PC's candidate, engages in a debate with his rivals. If the candidate for office is one of the PCs, a debate is resolved by choice of a Diplomacy or History check. A successful check against a Moderate DC results in one success and one failure. A success against a Difficult DC results in one success with no failures. If none of the PCs are running for office the candidate is assumed to have achieved one success and one failure.

Diplomacy (Moderate DC): The PC uses eloquent speech to get the voters to like him, or his candidate, and sway them to his side. This is good for one success per PC.

History (Moderate DC): The PC's knowledge of history allows him to speak intelligently about political issues. This grants a +2 Bonus to the next Bluff or Diplomacy check during the challenge.

Insight (Moderate DC): The PC is able to anticipate the desires of the electorate, making him more effective at manipulating them. This grants a +2 Bonus to the next Bluff or Diplomacy check during the challenge.

Intimidate (Moderate DC): The PCs bully others into agreeing to vote for their candidate. This check is good for only one success during the skill challenge. If one of the PCs is running for office, that PC's attempts to use this skill result in automatic failure.

Religion (Moderate DC): The PC running for office displays enough religious savvy to appeal to the various faiths among the electorate. This skill is good for only once success during the challenge. If the skill check fails, the PCs face a -2 penalty when dealing with those trained in the Religion skill until the next Bluff or Diplomacy check success.

Smear Campaign: The PCs run a smear campaign against the rivals of their chosen candidate (as per the smear campaign skill challenge).  If the smear campaign is successful, the PCs earn a number of successes equal to the complexity of the Smear Campaign skill challenge. If the campaign is a failure, the PCs accrue a number of failures equal to the complexity of the Smear Campaign skill challenge.

so why even play a fighter if you can play the paladin the exact same way behaviorally and get added power to boot. "Paladin" is about accepting better game-enhancing mechanics at the price of more rigid in game behavior.

Really?  So it goes something like this?

Fighter: "I want to be a paladin."
NPC: "Really?"
Fighter: "Yes."
NPC: "Very well."  Starts reading from a holy book while still in-character "Do you accept having to choose and stick to the lawful good alignment, eventhough neither of us actually knows that it exists or what it is?"
Fighter: "I do."
NPC: "Do you reject good game balance because you accidentally rolled a high Charisma?"
Fighter: "What?"
NPC: "I don't know what it means either."
Fighter: "Oh.  Umm, ok I do."
NPC: "In the name of all that is metagamey and broken, accept these better game enhancing mechanics."
Fighter: "These what?"
NPC: "Just get out there and try to fulfill a million different people's notion of good while not violating and part of any of them."

So the system is designed such that every single hit needs to be described to avoid confusion?  Here's a scenario.  The players are nudists, everybody in the world are nudists, it's not weird, it's totally normal in this land.  They are naked and they fight drakes taking damage throughout, but healing up with surges.  Later they meet the guy who raised the drakes.

Part 1:  I didn't describe any of the hits.  What does he see?

Part 2:  Lets say I described the drakes as biting the players, yet they healed up.  What does he see?
