Though the mechanic is what started the card, the flavor was what drove the card home. I'm glad you liked it. :)
I don't know that the card would have many memory issues - it's the first card most players who run it will play in the game, so they only have to remember their life total and the amount of life spent from painlands (which players are required to do anyway).
I can understand "you may look at your library" as a time-consuming effect. I feel that just looking at the top 8 or so cards wouldn't take up too much time though. I think what would be more time consuming would be if it were an enters-the-battlefield ability; pro's are getting into the habit of jotting down notes of otherwise forgettable information, and would probably write down their next card draws in a secret fashion so as to remember what they will draw (secret so that their opponents can't see what they're writing down).
Yeah, I'd understand if you didn't want to play it. The card was designed to be an early-game information-getter, not a hunky attacker/blocker.
