I have officially retired the paper game. I have been doing alot of research for awhile and decided to try my endeavors on MTGO. I have made an account about a month ago and haven't looked back since. I have a baby and wife to take care of and realized that it was too much for me to go out every Friday to play FNM, and of course the times I did I always had terrible guilt for not staying home with them.
With MTGO I can log on anytime, anywhere (granted I have an internet connection). I can draft at 2 am or I can compete in a 4 round Classic, Legacy, or Standard tournaments. I tried a few of the STD events, but I just get rocked by the flood of CawGo decks atm so I'm waiting till tomorrow to participate. As for Classic and Legacy..well lets just say my whole MTG career started with me going to Type 1 tournies and getting destroyed with my little piss-ant 7ED theme deck back in '04 so I will not be entering those till I'm done tweaking my current Classic deck (Memnarch Mind Control it's called).
So I have been keeping score with my decks that I have made. As I admit regretfully the time I have been on MTGO I've dropped almost a grand on cards. Mostly just converting my paper over. Since paper is worth more, I haven't lost any money yet. Anyways I have made a few decks, couple for fun, couple for competition. So far my fun decks are White Weenie and Squirrel Swarm. I have 3 decks I am wanting to try in a tourney; Eldrazi Green (Ill try tomorrow, STD) and my 2 Classics are Memnarch Mind Control and Masknought. Masknought I'm pretty comfortable with and believe its good to go (love the response I get when I'm able to drop a 12/12 Trample turn 1).
As for my Memnarch, well it's certainly my favorite deck. I have been tweaking constantly for the past 2 days. I have all the cards I need, I just have a problem with cutting to 60. Im sitting at 68 right now. Unfortunatly is HEAVY Artifact so I need the protection of Counterspells. Of course I would need more than 4 so my answer to that is Isochron Sceptors which I run 2 of. Mana is never a problem with Mishra's Workshop and Tolarian Academy at my side. The strategy I'm trying to perfect is land fetching. I run a Tinker and Demonic Tutor. Tinker for fetching Mycosynth Lattice or Darksteel Forge and Demonic for land fetching. Lands of course I talk about Tolarian Academy, Academy Ruins, or Eye of Ugin. EoU I have come to realize is VERY powerful card in this deck, specially with Lattice on the field. Most of my starting hands I had a fetch land (Sylvan or Expedition Map). I would use the Sylvan to grab TA and the Map to grap AR. Of course I use the ability of AR to return the Map to the top of my library to grab another land I need nex turn. TBH my main focus early game is getting those non-basic lands out. Average games last me 7-9 turns and the best I have done was turn 4 infinite mana with EoU out. Everybody has their mana tricks, mine is Filigree Sage-Tolarian Academy-Candelabra of Tawnos. I'm not interested in Voltaic Key because it taps. With the Sages, I can use over and over. I actually do run Tezz 1.0 to fetch either a Tawnos or the Sage as soon as he hits the field. I'll post a deck list later on when I get home and maybe you guys can help me out a bit.
So what's the cons of MTGO? Well simply put, it's online. You have so many cry babies or people who will talk alot of trash because you didn't let them win or played a card they didn't like. TBH I think I have actually been able to fully complete only a handfull of game. The rest came from my opponents conceding. It's funny because alot of concedes came from turn 1 land drops. If they and Eldrazi Temple or a Mishra's Workshop...SCOOP! It's actually really annoying, specially when they PM you saying "Eldrazi are cheap!" Or "You only won because my internet lagging." Yeah like that one made sense but it has been said. Look, as a '90s kid we didn't have the internet and we respected adults or else it was being grounded or spanked. Kids these days need a lesson in manners. But hey maybe I was just raised right, and I didn't even have a dad past the age of 12. Ok /rantoff. Point I'm trying to make, online experiances can be very nerve racking.
I'll get those deck lists up asap!
