I like everything that I'm reading here. The interaction system sounds like just enough to give everyone something to do (for example, find out a target NPC's interaction traits (goals, etc etc) and then provide ammo for the bard (or what-have-you) to use. Everyone can contribute to every kind of scene. Sweet!

On interactions: I really like the concept of NPC "hot buttons" for players to discover and push. Especially because the discovery of these motivations and aversions is likely to involve INT and WIS checks. In that sense, interactions would be an area where CHR is a very important stat, possibly the most important stat, but not the ONLY relevant stat.

As a man of few words, it is difficult for me to express my sympathies. My condolences to you Traderjodie, and to your children. Wrecan will be very missed. He was and always shall be my friend. He was very insightful, and his support of this game was unparallelled on these boards. But, I'd like to think of him as participating in the greatest LARPing session in existence. He can borrow my axe till I get there.

Enjoying the playtest packet a great. Gives me just enough to play the way I want to play. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with. I actually DO like the skill dice mechanic a lot, so a bit sad it might be going away, but I'm going to trust the alternatives will be just as interesting. Thanks for bringing in bits & pieces of the past, and reinterpreting the system with a more modern feel.

Sir Corin's got a point, there's a character in my group doing just what he says and the guy isn't greased up, just punching a lot. They're likely to beef up such feats, which would bring him onto par with the barbarian in the party, so I'm not sure Sir Corin's reservations aren't misplaced. Sorry about the triple negative.
I appreciate Clan Battlerage clarifying h/h view of how maneuvers could work like powers. I think maneuvers have to be defined a lot more specifically to make their...

sounds like the CP system from skills and powers in 2e
      April 27, 2013 7:51 AM PDT
Pondering the direction of skills. I asked myself what skills would I say I possessed in my life. Sadly, I can only think of two exemplary (Carpentry and Performance - day job vs. aspiring actor). My conclusion is this:
*Skills are vague in most cases - Looking at Perform (not a listed SKILL in this iteration as yet), obviously there are many types of performance (Dance, Oration, Acting, Painting, Sculpting, etc.). So it seems to me that a general Skill (ARTISTRY) can represent a sub-skill...

Umm, in my last session my level one party encountered a band of orcs. I went through both my magic missile spells, one of them empowered to do maximum damage, and I only killed one Orc. Granted, my first casting was split my missile between three different orcs (as they all were already damaged by a fire trap) but didn't kill a single one despite the fact that they were each already hurt. My second cast used my daily feat to empower them and two missiles hit one Orc and killed him, and one...

Maybe what they should do is have "classic" advancement, which is more of what we are used to and then "official advancement" for use in dnd encounters and living campaigns, as i suspect that's what is behind this move any way. Then people can chose. That could work but it involves not singling out the fast track approach as the default or "right" way to play.
I know this for sure, it will fail miserable in its goal of attracting old school players back into the fold if they read that the...

Thanks! I always think a D&D themed birthday cake would be really cool! A board game birthday can also be fun - everyone brings a board game to play, significant other gets to try lots of different games.

Like: Managing dead level by making not so dead. I believe there are multiple ways in the standard version to ensure a character get more than HP increase at a level up. Maybe in the simpler version this is more an issue, but it comes with the reduced system. Maybe you could think of a way to reduce the levels instead. A level 5 in the simple version could be equivalent to a level 10 in the standard version.
Like: Simpler spells. If a spell would create a fog, everyone would expect the fog...

The first two, yes (not as many HP for high-level monsters but the bottom of that curve has to start higher).

All that may be true, but admit it - this direction of D&Dnext is rekindling the flames of hope, and nostalgia is beginning to surface. The perfect mix of old and new (or so we hope).
PS - I love the idea of bounded accuracy, as I feel we are finally going back to role playing rather than knockoffs of video game design bonuses.

(con't) I think that the game does need to reward both good Character Building AND good Party Building. I mean, it is fun sometimes to make a special group that breaks from the norm, but part of the reason that is fun is because it does in fact make the whole concept more challenging. A group of all fighters is great in straight combat, but the lack of the other 3 archetypes makes it harder to avoid traps, handle swarms, counter magic, and heal magically, as well as repel undead. A party of all...

I love playing clerics, but I also like the option of DMing a world inspired by Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones - both settings with lower magic and less healing. Just as Mike Mearls likes to run an all day castle siege, and Chris Perkins a new campaign with lots of political intrigue, I think the basic rules should allow for an easy to use option for non-magical, or more rare, or slower forms of healing. Keep up the good work, Mike - and thanks as always for listening!

The generic environment rules are a neat point, actually. I'm always a fan of wider applicability. Maybe have some pre-composed weather, though (like heavy rain = wet + obscuring), as examples if nothing else.
      February 16, 2013 10:04 PM PST
For weather, I agree with you for the most part, but every once and again, throwing out a rainstorm and keeping the PCs from moving, or even making it affect the campaign in some way can be fun. There was a DM who used a hurricane to affect the game, wiped out a village and spawned strange ocean creatures in the local lake, kinda cool.
The other point about the rules? I do like it, yet I think some players will think that EVERYTHING needs to be written down.

Conceptually, you're absolutely right. But take for instance, another type of example, probably more close to reality than yours (4:1). What happens when they build the classes, precisely the way they want to, with each getting the powers and upgrades that feel right with a level, not too little and not too much. Then, lets say they run the math and it turns out that one class is 7% more powerful than another. Or perhaps 17% or 37%. Then, how exactly do you change those classes to fix it. How do...

I dont agree with experience changes, competent dms could handle exp. between classes. I always give different exp for all players, thats the different topic.
Before we compare barbarian and fighter, we should see paladin and ranger too. (maybe spellsword, duskblade whatever it is) Now, you are changing something but when you add paladin/ranger we`ll see some issues too.

After reading this article about advanced rules and all the options they intend to give us ... wow, this is gonna be the best version of D&D ever, by far, hands down, holy ****. I mean critical hit tables, hit locations, rules for keeps etc etc etc... whatever your group wants, you can run it. This is the way D&D was always meant to be baby! Take my money and publish this sh*t now WOTC!!!!

For clarification' sake, the playtest rules consist solely of what will become d&d basic, right? That is, the final product will have far more (optional) depth and variety than what we're seeing at this point?

      Expertise dice...
Great idea but...the first iterations of the playtest were more ‘old school’. Looks like we are moving back to extreme damage die rolls again… Things like the Fighter surge.. shudder! 12d6 suddenly? Very naff!
A more interesting expertise progression might be…
A simple d6, d8, d10, d12, 2d6, d6d8, d610, d6d12, d8d12, d10d12 2d12. This is more than sufficient expertise dice for all classes and ensures players think when and how to spend their dice.
      I also...
