I had a realization while playing in my last session. My players are so scared that their characters are going to die that they take FOREVER to decide what to do each time it is their turn. I joke that my campaign is Gygaxian, because I am unafraid to let characters die, but true death (with the character sheet being burned) isn't THAT common!

I put two groups through the original Tomb of Horrors when I was in high school. Each time, only one character (of about 5) made it out alive. Now, I can understand something like this really scaring players, but it didn't seem to faze my high school friends that much. In fact, they loved it, and the one who made it through wore it like a badge of honor.

So, my question is: is there something about 4e that makes losing a character so much harder?
