i agree also i think that there should be more than just magic weapons. there should also be mundane bonuses. for
example you could have a 1+ magic serrated/barbed longsword.

Just wanted to say that I really, really, really like marcos9999's ideas here.
      July 17, 2012 2:31 PM PDT
I agree with marcos9999 that the idea of hit points is lunacy especially considering its origin, but I do think Gygax and Arneson did it in the best possible way: characters started with the same HP (D6) as an attack could cause (D6). The blog post talks about the trouble of being stuck with 1 HP: 1 HP nothing! Every character was tromping around with enough health to maybe survive one sword blow - 1 was definitely worse but you weren't exactly sitting pretty anywhere else, either. The tactics...

I don't see why one class can't have both paths.
A character who chooses to focus on heavy armor and heavy weapons wouldn't have as strong of magic.
A character who chooses to strengthen their magic would give up the benefits of heavy armor and would be left to fight with staves.
But either way you would be utilizing the same basic pool of abilities.

Just because you're proficient with heavy armor doesn't necessarily mean you have to wear it. I've played plenty of Clerics in both 3e & 4e that wore cloth (or no) armor and wielded a quarterstaff instead of a mace. It's all about the choices you make, not the choices you have. You can have a thousand options, but you can only choose one at a time; and that's the way it SHOULD be.

I like skills in 3E but found the points system too fiddly and also the bonuses got to big to fast, higher levels could almost always make a check unless I threw in ridiculous DCs. I like the Tier idea, just make sure it scales with the levels.
      June 18, 2012 5:45 AM PDT
I in general like the skill points of 3e, but I also liked when semi-redundant skills were merged. I, however, want the merges to make sense. It makes sense for Open Lock and Disable Device to go together, and it makes sense for Sleight-of-Hand and Escape Artist to go together, but it does not really make sense to me to combine all four into one skill.
Also, I strongly believe in a difference between Search skill as an active skill, and Spot and Listen belonging to a separate, passive...
