OR, if you wanted to reference Star Trek more blatantly AND make the redshirt joke, instead of a "beam me up" thing (which is actually a misquote and was never used in the series at all), you could have sprung for a joke involving the famous constantly-used quote "He's dead, Jim".
I just introduced my two children to D&D last night via the Starter Kit. They are 7 and 8. I tried to take it easy with them and not throw a lot at them. Ran them through one encounter to get them used to things. I plan to slowly reveal things to them as I think they are ready for it. They are pretty smart for their age so I don't think it will take long. They had a lot of fun and so did I. My wife is even thinking of joining us. Hoping to get my 15 year old step son involved at some point.
Hello! I have been gaming for ..., well as long as I can remember. I have two daughters. They love D&D. I have to echo the original comments above! Every parent teacher conference includes multiple references to high math and problem solving skills. As well as imaginative and socially adept. Now I think their parents have a lot to do with this, but I am convinced the fun we have together playing D&D plays a huge role in developing those skills early on! I hope we can continue to play for years!...

I hope we can continue to play for years! My 9 year old is still my hard core D&D buddy. The 13 year old still plays occasionally, and Mom, well when she is in the mood plays her half-orc barbarian. One more comment on the new edition issue. We all actually love 4e, but to be honest the 9 year old and myself have gone back to the basics (the red box 1e) and have created 4 characters (2 each) and we are going to try and see them through to at least the Companion Set. This game is great on multiple levels - good to see others out there that enjoy it as well as we do! Cheers!
