I have mixed feelings about Backgrounds and themes... I feel that they are miles ahead of what D&D has done in the past. But then, I think back to what other systems do:
The system Mutants & Masterminds, a Point-buy d20 based Superhero system, has a source-book for using it in a Fantasy setting. I don't particularly like using it for that, since it just wasn't really built for that scale, but one thing that the sourcebook did impart to me is that it made me begin to question why...

I've never liked the mechanic of multiclassing but the theme / background sounds like a better fit for simulation than suddenly learning to cast spells or wield divine power. A more subtle way to customise a character than change its direction completely.

If we are headed down a thematic route for feats both the separate types and the one feat gives all benefits aproach could fit. Maybe as said below feats need to move away from single mechanic bonuses and encompass a broader effect with multiple bonuses to all aspects of the game. This may mean fewer feats but there could be variations on a feat to give slightly different bonuses and add more flavour to the characters.
      July 9, 2012 11:43 AM PDT
I definately like separating the combat bonuses from the other types of bonuses. Having feats focus on combat, while things like backgrounds and "traits" can handle other types of benefits sounds like it will allow players the ability to choose things that they would like their character to have without worrying about lagging behind in combat.

I'm a guy. I like pretty women. But all these bikini-clad or bare-midriff adventurers are ridiculous. It makes NO SENSE. It breaks immersion. And it makes it that much harder for many girls or young women to find D&D approachable.
Also, as a guy who likes playing funny characters, I think the occasional funny-looking guy or gal is perfectly appropriate. D&D is about adventure, but there should be room for other elements, and one of those is humor.
      Don't make D&D so...

I'm a big believer in "Getting to Yes." Present the options, all the options, to the players, and see what they latch onto. Then build a game around what they are playing. If they want to play a Tiefling, don't screw them over for wanting to play the Tiefling. Build a story that will accommodate that choice. If the player WANTS to have risks involved with the racial choice (because those risks could be a roleplaying MINE, like having to wear robes to disguise a devilish appearance), that's...

My campaign is quasi-historical, so I'm constantly saying no to races I haven't already distorted history to accommodate. I don't care one way or another about the frequency designations, because it should vary greatly from setting to setting.

Healing shouldn't be restricted to clerics! Wizards should have access to healing magic too. IMHO it doesn't make sense that clerics are always healers and wizards never are. Depends on personal choices, what their patrons teach them or give them from on high, etc. That said, magical healing can come in all the various flavors you feel like -an aura around the character, a specific spell that takes a whole round -or more!- and requires touching the subject, a hours- or day-long ritual, whatever....

Healing is a challenge, and not just the role of a cleric. While I think the 4e rules are a bit overly generous, the idea that characters can heal a significant number of hit points without the need of magic makes sense in the general design of D&D.
Hit points have always been a sort of bucket that accounts for many things other than just physical health. Being worn down during an encounter, to be able to regain some of your health with a short rest works well. Enhancing that 'healing'...

Proficient real world fighters really tend to focus primarily on one fighting style. There are only a few types of historical fighters that used bows, spears and swords-- and they were all from the noble class of society.
Everyone else has always chosen to master what sort of fighting style, perfect one weapon. This should be considered in the narrative.

Something a lot of people forget about the fighter is that its name is a broad term for many different kinds of men-at-arms. This is why many people argue that ranger and paladin should be fighter themes because honestly they really can be.
The fighter should have a multitude of styles and options available to them but they shouldn't be allowed to have them all. The fighter in question has to pick and choose what he/she actually knows, and from there get better at it. You can make a very...

Gotta be paladin, you get it all - spells, big armor and weapons, unique special abilities, and some really cool roleplaying hooks. Rangers are a close second, though I've never really agreed with them getting spells... I think they were at their finest in 3.5 with a lot of skill points and good fighting and stealth.
Wizards should be awesome, and often are fun... but there's always been something lacking. I think it's that magic in stories is fantastic, and in D&D it's rather mundane....

I like Warlord and Bard. Perhaps more so Bard although I never cared for the whole "musician/dancer" theme that is forced to accompany their basic skills and role. I enjoy having lots of skill options and in battle primarily strengthening my allies.
In fact, I would like it very much if there was a class that really strengthened the concept of giving your allies bonuses and maybe even getting to choose which bonuses to give which allies at which time while outside of battle primarily...

A module for harder resurrection rules would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know that I could run a D&D campaign where raising the dead is hard, but doable, without completely unbalancing the game (so.. keeping save or die effects manageable, instead of Cloud Kill as an at-will for every monster over CR 15). Being able to turn around and just dial back the difficulty a bit so I could run a full blown blender of a dungeon with players bouncing back as if they had respawn, using the same...

I don't see why one class can't have both paths.
A character who chooses to focus on heavy armor and heavy weapons wouldn't have as strong of magic.
A character who chooses to strengthen their magic would give up the benefits of heavy armor and would be left to fight with staves.
But either way you would be utilizing the same basic pool of abilities.

Just because you're proficient with heavy armor doesn't necessarily mean you have to wear it. I've played plenty of Clerics in both 3e & 4e that wore cloth (or no) armor and wielded a quarterstaff instead of a mace. It's all about the choices you make, not the choices you have. You can have a thousand options, but you can only choose one at a time; and that's the way it SHOULD be.

I like the idea of crossing boundaries of class as you level up but I never liked multiclassing. Sacrificing spell abilities to learn advanced fighting techniques is a great way of player choice to customise their character. It does make balancing a bit harder but if you want a warrior Mage he won't be as good as either pure class and maybe slightly weaker overall for the level but that is the choice you make. As I said in a previous post having unique game mechanics for each class is a great...

I like the idea of giving the Fighter some distinct sub-systems. As others have mentioned, I don't feel like basic combat actions should ever be exclusive to the fighter (disarming, tripping, charging, etc).. but truly spectacular shows of martial talent should be exclusive to the Fighter and its derivations. Stuff like tearing off the giant's arm, or executing complex attack sequences. The idea of being able to swap extra attacks for maneuvers is a particularly exciting one to me.
      My only...
