I think 4e fundamentally has a problem of pacing.  When you are trying to tell a story, even if the story is "you go into a dungeon and kill a dragon", you don't want combat to consume every moment of the game.  Even if the combat is fun, and sometimes it is not.

Anyway here is my solution.  Try it sometime.

Combat in 4e is long.  Individual player turns are lengthy and complicated, with multiple actions per turn, each with their own unique rules.  Out-of-turn immediate actions slow it down yet again and throw off the pace.  As characters gain levels and items the situation ...
