About Me

About Me: I am a Level 3 DCI Judge for Magic: The Gathering from Davis, California.
I am also a columnist and editor for the Magic strategy website Channelfireball.com.

Movies: The Empire Strikes Back is the first movie I ever saw in theaters (my parents took me as a two-year old), and it still holds a position of significance.
Back to the Future is the movie I've seen the most. Because of this, I've developed a taste for movies that deal with time and space in funny ways, Memento and Sliding Doors being two examples.
I also love musicals: Moulin Rouge, the Sound of Music, Chicago, Across the Universe.
Oh, and anything with John Cusak in it, High Fidelity, Grosse Pointe Blank, and Say Anything being at the top.

TV Shows: Battlestar Galactica is my all-time favorite show.
Also Sports Night, Pushing Daisies, Cupid, My So-Called Life, basically any smart show that got cancelled because Middle America didn't get it.
Currently not watching due to time constraints: Burn Notice, Fringe, Caprica (coming soon)

Books, Comics and Graphic Novels: I am a huge Sci-Fi reader. I have read most of the works of Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut, and Orson Scott Card. I'm slowly working my way through Phillip K. ****, Pohl Anderson, and a few others.
My favorite author is probably Matt Ruff. No, you haven't heard of him.

Music: I have a deep appreciation for the giants of rock. The Beatles, The Who, and Led Zeppelin being at the top.
I went through a punk/ska phase in college. The main holdovers from that are Less Than Jake and Rocket from the Crypt.
I am currently on two divergent courses:
1) Indie pop- The Weepies, New Pornographers, The Format
2) Indie country- The Sadies, Supersuckers
These two paths strangely converge upon Neko Case, the world's most perfect artist.

Hobbies: Magic: The Gathering, pretty much everything about it: playing, judging, collecting, writing about it. There isn't a day that I don't do something related to Magic.

Likes: When a plan comes together.

Dislikes: Chaos and entropy. Fundamentally, this means I hate the universe.
