Ah, how did people manage before PhD Comics?? As a former grad student (one who bailed out and did not get a PhD, though), I feel your pain. And yes, one should tell grad students what they're getting into: I had no clue at all. Teaching is great, but grading is indeed soul-crushing. The (engineering) department I was at had a pretty competitive undergrad program, so the undergrads were committed (and under pressure, as well, I think). What's your field?

Physics, specifically experimental neutrino physics. Public webpage for the experiment I'm on: t2k-experiment.org/ (I'm not in the picture They took it at a collaboration meeting that a lot of people missed.) There's a movie for phdcomics now. It's fairly close to the comics, especially the early ones. My only complaint is they gave the nameless grad student a name at the end. The acting wasn't the greatest, but they did find actors who really look like the characters. Oddly enough the guy who plays the main character is actually a freshman.

Sorry for the delay. Will update in a few hours. In other news I somehow agreed to having a class scheduled on Thanksgiving.

Yikes! That sure sucks Nightdrifter. Gosh, who in the world would want to take a class on that day? Of course, I forget not everyone in the world celebrates with us. Is this your Thanksgiving this month or ours next month?

Canadian Thanksgiving. It was cause it's a small class and the prof was away for almost a month so we needed to make up a lot of lost classes. So getting everyone to agree to it was actually easy: my family is in another province and the other students are all foreign so it's not like any of us really had holiday plans.

How far away is Maeve from Elan, and does she think she can break through the inner circle surrounding Elan (which presumably has the most aggressive mage-haters)?
She has two options basically: walk up there and cut the rope, or "cast" something from afar to help him.

sorry for the late and simple post, have been busy and tried to post wednesday but my internet lagged out on me and lost my post. found time late last night and than just added a bit more to it today.
btw not sure what the ac of a rope would be. I think most inanimate objects have a really low AC or no AC but that gets modified by their size modifier. Big things if you swing at them with a melee weapon you will hit since they are easy to hit and are not going to move. However if your usinga ranged attack you can still miss that door 10 feet in front of you if your not aiming well and not using the bow properly. Still not likely to miss though. But you take that same bow and try to shoot a really small object like an apple off someones head. Well thats a challenging shot.
If I did this in a game to players I'd probally give it an AC based only on hit size modifer and the difficulty of the shot. That way we don't have to minus any numbers from the players rolls.
Rope is probally diminitive +4 AC and a challenging shot kind of like in called shots would be -10 to the shot (in this case just make that minus a bonus to the targets AC)
So the ropes ac would be around 14 maybe of course this is me mostly rambling cause I've always wanted to shoot a hangman down in a game so nightdrifter probally already assigned an AC or modifiers.
good news is I didn't really have to use an adamantine arrow I just thought it best fluff wise and rope only has 2hp per inch of thickness so this rope probally only has 2 to 4 hp tops less it is really thick
Anyway I'll try to make sure I keep my posts up better from now on looking forward to seeing if me and Kes actually hit since we both hit the exact same AC. Unless we are withing 30 feet in which case mine is one better unless she has point blank too which I'm not sure of.

Gah, got sick for the second time this month so have fallen behind on everything. Basically the Elan encounter is not meant to be combat (unless the PCs get uncharacteristically aggressive). So round by round actions aren't necessary. You can assume you can 'freely' move where you want. Okay, it would really be some pushing and shoving in the crowd, but in game terms these are mostly commoners/experts. They hardly pose a threat to the party individually. Hmm, not sure on the numbers for pulling a robin-hood-esque shooting through the rope. Pincushion's numbers sound fine to me. I had assumed something simpler and hadn't thought of a more dramatic solution. But I gotta say that shooting through the rope from afar would go a long ways towards swaying the crowd towards backing down!

Well, it's good that you're better now! I get strep throat/pharyngitis about 4 times a year, which really sucks. But... I can't complain with Aka around, given her numerous allergies. @Pincushion: I thought that Lutgar's rambling was RPing, but I guess you're a "natural rambler". That's cool!

yeah I do seem to ramble a lot. no matter what kind of character I try to make it always seems like I do a lot of the talking.
in a pathfinder game I was going to make a monk with a vow of silence and try to rp that aspect. My friends were going to bet money that I couldn't do it.....So far I haven't created the character as of yet and it might be a while till we do another pathfinder game.
currently one of my friends is running an adventure using the Iron Kingdoms setting. Basically a lot of the setting that was published was rushed and unfinished, but still interesting. It's d20 most of the gear is identical in price and weight as well as other stats as it is in 3.0.
However the setting is low to no magic for the players. Basically we have a necromancer spell caster and thats about it. other magic exists such as potions and what not, but they are very few and far between. We may come across one to three healing potions in the whole compaign which can be bad cause if we fail a certain save after drinking one we could end up being addicted to them and will take penalty's for not having our fix on healing for the day. That and we'd be drinking them even when we're not hurt.
I'm actually creating a weapons master with the mighty build trait which allows him to wield weapons one size catagory larger than normal with no penalties and I haven't chosen my second trait yet. However I'm leaning toward nobilty so that I can start with a lot of gold. Since I want to have at least one masterwork weapon.
My character will be wielding two greatswords. and probally chainmail or a chainshirt for armor.
the setting doesn't really have AC it has defense based off dexterity and I believe class and maybe a few other mods. Than it his armor that doesn't give a defense bonus but gives damage reduction instead. I think leather armor gives like 1d6 dr and its always random per hit.
anyway this is my rambling for the day I have to get going in a bit. I'll check later and probally make a post again late tonight.
Oh and nightdrifter for dramatic effect whether the arrow misses the rope, what is directly past the rope that the arrow could punch into? something thick and solid or metal that the arrows would make a lot of noise when they sunk into them?
