Must we be Greek, or can we be from other surrounding areas during the same time period? If so, then could you give a more specific time period than just 'the world of Greek Mythology' and/or a brief list of places we could be from other than the Greek city-states?

Background Show
Living in Sparta as a boy is not an easy thing. When a Spartan child is born, they will throw out the child if there are any physical deformities. At a pubescent age, the chld is thrown into the wilderness with naught but a spear to defend themselves with. If, and when, they return, the child is hailed, and will become a man. Some even speculate that a Spartan woman is the only true woman, as it takes a such a woman to birth a Spartan child.
Thesius, a typical boy, was a warrior in the Spartan Army when Leonidas went to battle with the army. Led by 300 Spartiates, the army of 1300 Greeks wascompletely obliterated by the Persians. Thesius, a coward at the time, hid under the bodies of his allies, whil ehe watched Leonidas himself die at the hands of the Persians. After the armies moved back, Thesius ran back to the Spartan City-State. Not telling anyone what happened, he spoke that he was the only survivor. When the Spartans led a full Greek alliance against Persia, Thesius went back, determined to right the wrongs he made on the last stand. During this battle, Thesius killed many, many Persians. When they made the journey back to Sparta after their victory, Thesius was hailed a hero, and immediately made a general of his own battalion of soldiers. In Sparta, this is considered a tremendous honor, though anywhere really, it is still an honor. Thesius was considered an Aspect of Ares.
However, his ghosts stil haunt him from the Stand-off at the Battle of Plantaea, and he will always be scarred from his failure to fight like a man...

Personality Show
Thesius puts off an air of supercilliousness, but is always a nice man, even though he even looks battle-ready. He is friendly, though edgy sometimes, and not really good at conversations. This battle-seasoned man is always ready to protect a friend, as he is haunted by the ghosts of the Battle of Plantaea.

"It's dangerous to go alone, Jerk-wads!" (Borderlands 2)

“All right, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man whose gonna burn your house down - with the lemons!” (Portal 2)

EDTA, when you are talking of a low-magic feel with regards to magic items, does that mean magic in general is rare to non-existant?
If so, I might not be best off with putting forward a character that is purely magic..

You could be from the surrounding areas rather than what was the focus of the legends, which was more or less the southernmost portions of modern-day Greece.

I don't really know where to pin down the year as I don't think it really fits into one, but I'll say that the various city states have been founded, and the Peloponnesian Wars haven't happened yet, meaning that the time frame is earlier than 450 BC.

This would probably mean that Etruscan origins, Macedonian, Thrace, and so on. If they were an Iron/Bronze Age civilization in and around the Aegean Sea, it would probably be fine. What were you thinking? The time-frame is too early for Alexander the Great or Rome, if that places it.

Magic in D&D is a lot different than magic in pretty much any collected mythology or legend. Magic items will probably not exist for the most part outside of the hands of the gods, which is what I mean about low magic. I don't want to resrict class choices because the thing you want to play only really exists in D&D, as there are a lot of ways for powers to be explained.

Maybe in your case, your father was Hephaestus, and you carry in you a flame from his forge. Or you communed with Prometheus and learned the secrets of the first fire brought from Olympus. Or maybe any number of stories.

True, you might need a more fantastic origin or backstory for overtly supernatural or magical powers, but at the same time Greek mythology is full of outs to make it work. You don't need to worry that your character would fit in less if they have the Arcane power source (or any other type for that matter). Yes, magic is nothing ordinary; you wouldn't find practitioners in every town or region, but it wouldn't be something that only you could do, either. Also, at this point, your characters would definitely not be something 'ordinary'.

Hello all. I'm new to play by posts and I'm very interested in how this setting sounds. However, I have a time consuming obligation for the next month and, though I would still be able to post, it would not be as frequently as I would like to in that time. Is there an expectation of how often we post?

In most games, it is considered the norm to post either once a day, or once every two days.  Some games go slower, like once or twice a week.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven.  You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool.

Well, if it for a month, the recruitment would take up at least some of that time. Outside of that, I'd like for people to be able to post once every couple of days, with once a week being a hard minimum as of now. Once a day or every two days would be nice as well if the group could swing that.

I would be lenient in cases where someone is busy if I were made aware of it, but the posting would just be so that things can keep moving. Of course, final issues would be worked out with whoever is selected to accomodate what the group wants. That is just what I think would be good for now.

Thanks for the response. Now for my submission I'm thinking either an inspiring warlord or a hammer wielding ranger demigod of Hephestus... I will continue mulling over my options.
