The ninja's blade slices through the air but deals JP only a glancing blow.

The ninja rolls one success and JP's lethal soak of two is subtracted from that so he deals no real damage.

Keiko fires off shots at the blackened ninjas but the bullets careen off the shadowy armor of both. They barely react to the impacts, a jarring of the shoulder or pause in movement, before they are once more poised to attack.

Keiko's Crunch Show
Bullets are dodgeable, just not parry-able (Scion: Hero 192), and don't forget that taking two actions reduces your action pools by two for each so Keiko should only be rolling a pool of 8. I'll take off the first two rolls so you have the same successes anyways. The ninja's have a Dodge DV of 6 (-1 because they attacked) so the first hits with a threshold of 3 and the second just hits. That's 3 lethal to the first and 1 to the second (link) neither of which beat their soak, unfortunately.

Things may look grim so here is some tactical advice:
  • Focus Fire: Targets have their DVs lowered by 1 for every attack directed at them until they act again (the onslaught penalty). The ninjas who are acting on Tick 0 and Tick 2 have already moved and both have been attacked so they'll be easier to hit.
  • Close to Melee: There are characters with a lot of Strength (Epic Strength in fact) which doesn't do them a whole lot of good with guns. If you have good Strength, grab a crowbar and head into battle.
  • You Guys are Also Fine: The ninjas roll a lot of dice for attack and have good soaks, but you all do too. Don't let sticker shock get you down.
  • John's a-Coming!: Since KayneRahl can't make it to the party, John Grimm is a full-on NPC who will be joining the fray soon (and is on the new battlewheel below).

Penthos and Eric act in this tick and I'll post the ninja's action after them.

When someone else was talking sense, Penthos was rather the quiet fellow. He felt her call to Valor resonate deeply in him, though, and rushed to grab the weakest ninja at hand (from either tick 0 or tick 2), meaning to smite him to smithereens in one fell swoop.

A flying man with wings of shadows, and ninjas in the heart of America... what have we come to ?

Crunch Show
Penthos tries to grapple the closest ninja, who is hopefully within range. Otherwise I don't know what penalty would be appropriate ? This is our first fight, the others will be much cleaner.

Roll: Clinck attack = 5 success = Str 4 + Brawl 2 = 4 + 1 from E.Strength
I don't know what might be the DV, so I'll assume 2. It's still 3 threshold success, so I roll damage of (p194):
Dmg = 7B = Str 4 + Threshold 3 + 1 = 6 (3x10) + 1 from E.Strength

Sorry for the delay, this is my first combat in Scion.  MJ, am I able to grab a crowbar, get to a ninja, and attack in the same turn?
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven.  You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool.

Keiko's Damage rolls Show
(Redoing now I have access to my books )

I factored in the -2; her base is 8d and she rolled 11 and 6 dice.

So 3 success on the first shot = 7L Piercing damage. (3 Threshold 3 Weapon +1)

(7d10) = 1,1,2,3,5,6,10 = 2 successes and they only get 1/2 their armor value for Lethal Soak.

So 2 successes on the 2nd shot. (6DV -1 for attacking -1 due to second attack this tick as the first shot is unlikely to kill anything). = 6L Piercing Damage (2 threshold, 3 weapon +1)

(6d10) = 1,2,4,5,6,8 = 1 success so pretty much not going to do any damage.

Combat in General Show
The attack sequence is on page 195 for those with the books.
Resolution of an attack goes:
1) Declare Attack (DM Awards any stunt dice. Stunt dice are a source of XP but will slow down a PbP game...)
2) Defender declares defenses (No idea how to handle this)
3) Attack Roll vs Defense: (This is easy at a table, but I think we are going to need the Dodge/Parry DV of the creature to speed this up in PbP after they have resolved their actions. Not simultaneous actions happen with no DV penalty!)
4) Calculate Damage: Attack Successes > Current DV then you might do damage. Raw Damage = Threshold Successes + Attack Strength + 1 (so for Keiko's gun it is (Threshold + 3+1)L, or Heavy Unarmed of (Threshold +5+1)B). Various knacks and powers may apply.
5) Apply Hardness - if Attack Successes > Hardness go to 6, else the attack does no damage.
6) Roll Damage - roll you damage dice and count successes as normal.
7) Apply Soak: subtract the Soak value (possibly adjusted by powers/traits eg Piercing halves Armor soak) for the damage type (Agro/Lethal/Bashing).
8) Apply Results: if there are any damage successes left these are applied as actual damage to the target's health.

As you can see this is much more complicated than DnD's roll d20 look at Defence, roll damage if you hit, subtract resistance, add vulnerability, subtract damage from Hp.

It is also what leads to undamageable characters (which is what derailed the last Scion game I played - combat wasn't "epic" or "heroic" it was just annoying - further exemplified by Keiko's rolls above where 7 pool for damage translates to "no effect"). With legend 4 you can easily get a Dodge DV of 14 base, making it near impossible to get Attack Successes over the DV, or you can go the Epic Stamina route and get a Lethal Soak of 10 making it nigh impossible to actually get any hurt on the character even though you hit.

The ninjas get half their bashing soak value as lethal soak then their armor's on top. These guys have prepublished stats but I am a little shocked at how this is working out. I'll try and think of some house rules... For now, I'm halving the soak values from the published stats; still not enough for 2 successes and 1 success to get through, though.

Penthos throws himself at the nearest ninja, knocking him sideways and away from JP. He wraps his strong arms around the figure and squeezes, hearing the armor creak and crack under his grip.

3B damage to the ninja!

@Pashalik_Mons: Attacking with a crowbar will be (Dex + Melee). You're close enough to get to the ninja Penthos has in a bearhug who currently has a DV of 4 so that's how many successes you need to get. Anything over that is a threshold success. Your damage pool is (Str + 2 [crowbar] + threshold successes) and you get a bonus two successes from Epic Strength.

I'm not surprised, and didn't expect to get much or anything from it. I had ok luck on the attacks but dismal luck on the damage rolls. The game system is however set up that way; roll 7 dice expect 3 successes - for armored opponents that just isn't going to be enough unless you are pulling Agro damage. Even Keiko, a realitively weak Stamina character soaks 4L (and is Bulletproof so negates Piercing from firearms). In essence the game is engineered to make things hard to kill unless you have 3 or more dots of Epic Strength vs things with no more than 2 Epic Stamina.

Incidently the "monsters" seem to have their armor bonuses already factored into the Soak (unlike what I did with Keiko), so as a "monster" Keiko's Soak would read Soak: A1 L4 B6 (Bulletproof Vest +2L/2B).

apologizes as haven't had time to read the rules as well as I'd like, but I'm assuming there's a equivalent to "aid another" that a number of hereoes could help someone bring down difficult opponents?

Yes, its called co-ordinated assault. My last Scion character was quite good at it; she spent most combats (until she got some Epic Str) co-ordinating assaults because she wasn't getting hit but couldn't hurt anything....

Eric sees two men trying to fight off a ninja.  He almost raises Giantbane, but he fears accidentally hitting Penthos.  Instead, Eric grabs a fallen crowbar and moves in.  He takes a swing, but the black robed figure twists and turns and the crowbar sails right past him.

Now that he's close, Eric finally recognizes JP as one of the two men.  He lets out a small laugh.  "Fancy meetin' you here, stranger!"

Ok, here goes.

dex + melee: 5 dice, 3 successes, fail.

The ninja facing off with Eric swings a sickle-like kama blade at him which the Scion of Thor meets with his crowbar. The other ninja comes at Keiko with another shadow ninja-to blade, but the agent ducks under the blade.

Alright, this is my new fix which starts this round. Rather than Defense values being based on (Dex + Athletics + Legend)/2 it's based on the lower of Dex or Wits plus Legend. This is from WoD combat and will hopefully make people a little easier to hit without breaking the system in the other direction.
