Currently in the process of moving, sorry for the delay in posting. Also Mysteria, I can't tell if you're unhappy with how I'm playing Vark, but I'd hope you'd let me know explicitly if that were the case. I don't want to make this less fun for anybody else, but nobody wants the DM to punish them for their in-character decisions. That being said, negative consequences are not punishment, and I can handle them as long as I know they're for the good of the narrative. Just remember: I'm not holding back the story; this IS part of the story, as is everything we do. Now let's see if this +14 Intimidate is worth a damn...
"A silver and a copper won't cut it." snarks the half-orc behind the desk.
Vark glares at both the wardens in turn, and when he speaks his words are pure venom. "You listen real good now, boys, cuz I'm only sayin' this once. I'm Vark the Shark. Mothers tell their kids about me in quavering whispers. Men have killed their own selves to avoid my wrath. Neither orcs nor humans are willin' to take responsibility for me. I been cooped up on a floatin' barrel for Desna knows how long, and I'd be more than happy to give my muscles a good stretch. I probably can't take all o' you, but I swear by the gods I'll get the two o' you before I'm through. You ask me for more metal, you're gonna get it, and it'll be a fair bit sharper than these coins. Or you let me go about my business, and I'm out o' your hair with nary a drop o' blood."
Intimidate (1d20+14=27)
If successful...
Show
As the wardens stand down, Vark sighs disappointedly, shrugs, and walks to rejoin his companions. "Sorry for the delay. Just havin' a friendly chat with a couple o' the wardens." He punctuates this sentence with a wide, toothy grin. "What's next?"
Hoping that beats their Will defenses, even with the +5 Unfriendly modifier. Of course, now they're hostile. Look at all the plot hooks I'm giving you!
Edit: And thanks, Cailte.

I wanted to make sure you're not suddenly in a fight you can't handle. (Because a fight with one Duskwarden would promptly draw the rest.) Your intimidate check resolves that conundrum nicely. (Besides, the Duskwardens themselves would prefer not to get into a fight over petty coin, even though they disapprove about bullying.)
The duskwarden narrows his eyes and backs off, "Fine, we'll show you the way up." It's quite obvious that he's deliberately leaving out the part about keeping Vark safe throughout the trip.
The dwarf shrugs and says, "Well, hot-bloodedness won't serve him well on the Path." As Vark joins them, he suddenly 'forgets' to hand him his amulet and briskly says, "Let's be off, fall in, behind me and Serrit here." He marches off towards the entry, where he goes past two more Wardens. The first is another dwarf who bears such a resemblance to the first that it's obvious that they're related. The second is a human who's Osirian descend is plain to see.
Serrit and the first dwarf take the point, while the second dwarf and the Osirian take the back. As you enter the darkness, Serrit's amulet lights up, revealing a large passageway, with smooth stone walls and floor, sloping upwards gently. "Stay together, don't make any noises, don't delay." he admonishes you as he starts forward at a rather brisk step.
You, as well as a hanful of other travellers, mostly light travelling merchants, but also one that looks like a mercenary and an entertainer, fall in behind him. Thus begins your journey up the Half-Light Path ...
Pause so you can tell me if there's anything specific you want to do while going up, plus where you want to be in the group.

I personally would like to travel in the middle of the group. It's the perfect spot; you can watch the backs of the people in front of you and the people behind you probably don't know how to use knives well enough to stab you in the back with them.
As the wardens stand down, Vark sighs disappointedly, shrugs, and walks to rejoin his companions. "Sorry for the delay. Just havin' a friendly chat with a couple o' the wardens." He punctuates this sentence with a wide, toothy grin. "What's next?"
"You kept some of your gold and managed to have a bit of fun. A wise decision, if the results went the way you wanted them to."
Jair sees Novaria finding her way around to the front of the group. "Novaria, perhaps you might find me worthy to walk beside on this journey? I'm sure the esteemed Wardens will be enough to deter any attack by the sane."

With a short "Thank you", Khaled takes the amulet and puts it on. Letting the other pathfinders pass him on the way up, he falls to the back of the group and begins the ascent directly in front of the wardens.
Surprising the orc didn't choose violence. He might have some common sense after all. Although a bully's mind.

btw what does jair look like?
Norovia looks Jair in the eye, and an easy smile tugs at her lips, he is a handsome man and the touch of fey blood evident in his features brings a sparkle to her eye.
"Of course you can walk with me," she says as she settles in among those near the front, a charcoal stick and parchement in her hand as she walks.
As they pass interesting things she makes a few rough lines on her parchment, not enough to be a full picture, but just enough that they might trigger memory for later on to do a true picture. This process causes her to fall slowly back through the group.

Shoulder length orange-red hair, scale mail from shoulders to feet. Nothing particularly fancy about the armor, but the hilt of his sword looks like a dragon breathing fire into the sword. No facial hair; elven earbrows, ears slightly pointed, green eyes.
"So what is a pretty lady, such as you, doing in the Pathfinders? It seems like this profession has attracted those with... mediocre attractiveness, if you know what I mean."

(In his best Mr. Burns' voice): Ehhhxcellent.
These folk act like this is somethin' more than a glorified tunnel. All a bunch o' show, I'll bet. Makes it seem more exotic and costly. Everyone else can hug their little necklace; I've always liked the dark.
Normally, Vark would prefer the rear. Since that position is already spoken for, he'll opt for right behind Jair. He is unwilling to put the locals directly at his back, especially so close on the heels of his... confrontation. He is also unwilling to lead with no amulet.
As Jair is conversing with Norovia, Vark walks up behind him, places a hand on his shoulder, and talks into his ear. "Don't worry, Jair. I'm right behind you."

As you continue on your way, the Duskwardens lead you onto a section consisting of twisting stairways, partly carved right from the rock, partly formed of bricks, and more often than not repaired at least part way with newer woodworks. Quite clearly, this is the pedestrians' part of the Path, for the wagons you saw below could never pass this way.
The staircases are intercepted by stretches of passageways, crossing through several natural caves, often passing by bricked-over side passages where the Duskwardens are especially cautious and usher you forward quickly. At one point, you even pass towards the outside of the cliff, mounting alongside it for several hundred yards before plunging back inside. The vertiginous view - if you dare look down for only a small chain is between you and the abyss, - lets you see that by that time, you're already almost halfway up.

"Sometimes being plain in the eyes of others is an advantage," Norovia says, "looks are often our least useful skill anyway, though I suppose they may help in this task, one way or another."
When they exit and can see the sky again Norovia, looks up and out rather than down, taking a moment to scrawl a note quickly as they head back into the dark of the path.
