One thing I'm looking at is dealing with a few itches that need scratching in 3.5 before 5.0 comes along. It's still a while yet, but given commitments and game speed and a general lack of love for 3.5 these days I doubt I'll see more than a couple of games anyhoo before diving headfirst into 5.0.
So what I was thinking of doing was what we'd done successfully in the past, that is put together a group of characters and then advertise for a DM for the party. It worked very well for the Auction of Shade thread - if you are a DM who is utterly feed up with having different characters and/or players drift in and out of a game the group in that thread is totally unchanged after many years at this point. Meanwhile we've gone through 3 DMs and in slow mode now while Omen finds time, heh. But the group is there pretty much intact.
But the point is say in my case, I've been going over all the various builds and bits and pieces I've done and realized, hey, I've never actually run a pure mage type in 3.5 (I've always tended towards psionics) and would really like to get one off the ground. I figure there's a bunch of builds people haven't had chance to do and would like to, so I'm thinking of at least getting a thread up for people to pop these in on their down time and maybe something will come of it all...
I've got an initial character already sorted in my mind - an illusionist specialist gnome that'll go into pretty much any setting. But I'm probably also going to put up an assassin/warlock type. Once I get to point x in the not very distant future I'll start a thread in the Tavern, if interest is generated I'll ask to have a formal setup thread.
I know how you feel, 3.5 was fun...thats when I fell in love with Eberron.....to bad my group at the time like playing FR....gah... well I'd be interested in playing a 3.5 game, dust off my 3.5 character building skills :P

I would like to run a DnD 4e game based out of Hammerfast. I will be using the Hammerfast campaign supplement as a starting point, but I have several ideas that will make the adventure original. I'm thinking of a party around 4-5 players and maybe having the long term campaign being based in the Forgotten Realms universe. It would be easy enough to have Hammerfast hidden up in the mountains somewhere and then eventually having the game expand further into the Sword Coast.
Anyway, the difference in this campaign would be I'm planning on trippling the experience gained from encounters. This will help the PbP game progress at a faster rate and should have the characters leveling about every 3-4 encounters rather than every 10. I think this will keep the game exciting and allow for a lot more progression than a typical PbP game. So what do you say, anyone interested in something like that?
I would be very interested. Dwarves are my favorite race so Hammerfaast would work very well. The increased speed for leveling would eb nice too. Although it you run a premade adventure, you might have to curb that a bit or the party could out level the adventure pretty fast.
Cupofchuck: You mention anything about the FR and you have me interested. Even with it being a 4th edition game. Let me know if you decide to run it and I'll put in a submission. Probably going to be a very basic, barebones mechanical build as I never bought more than the first 3 core books but it is mostly about the RP anyway.
That's cool, I only have the 1st, 3 books plus the 2 FR books. But I do use my Insider sub quite a bit to supplement that data. I'm working on finding an aucceptable way to display the map for 4th edition. I'll let you know when I move forward.
If you have not heard of RPTools, you might want to check them out. It takes a little bit of playing with to get used to, but it makes great maps and allows you to easily move the icons for the players and monsters around. Also is easy to import maps into so if you can get a copy of a map from a premade adventure you can easily put it into the Map Maker program. I use it in conjunction with Photo Shop. Thsi lets me modify the map and erase all the markers they put on them to let you know where everyone starts and to hide the secret stuff. Pretty much any paint type program would work.
Anyways. I think it is a pretty cool set of gaming programs so thought I would mention them.
Wash: "Yeah well, if she doesn't give us some extra flow from the engine room to offset the burn through, this landing is gonna get pretty interesting."
Mal: "Define interesting."
Wash: "Oh god oh god we're all gonna die?"
Mal: "This is the captain. We have a...little problem with our engine sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then...explode."

Consider me interested! I think the XP rate would keep it interesting and like Draidden I'm a fan of dwarves. Also, having a couple of Eberron characters and a Greyhawk character, it's only fair that I try to run a Forgotten Realms character as well .

Great, that makes 3 interested so I think I'll proceed to the application phase.
I also had a successful map test this morning in the map testing thread so it looks like I can apply the grid I made to just about any image. So I'm hoping to have some pretty maps for the game as well.

I'd like to add my kudos to the RPTools mapping software. We use one of their programs, Maptools, in my real life game. There are 5 of us playing from 4 different cities in western Canada. The software allows everyone to log in and control tokens, build in character sheets for auto rolls, auto initiatives, etc. The DM can put in light blocking layers, maps from PDF/JPG/etc, and completely control the game. If I ever got into an in person game I'd very much consider just using Maptools to run things. I haven't seen any of RPTools other software in the works but I'm sure it is pretty brilliant.
Thram: The Auction of Shade, wasn't that the game that Copper Griffin started up as your first DM ages ago? I'm still kicking myself over missing that one...well, for being too busy to make a submission at the time. After hearing how well the first attempt at 'Request a DM' went I'm sure you'll find interest. You have me intrigued as both a player and a DM.

@Guido_ca
It was the game ran by Copper Griffin indeed. Unfortunately, he had had to drop it after only a comparatively short while. Then we managed to lure GlassGEO into taking back the mantle, but he went AWOL as well. And last Omen is now trying to muster some time to GM us. It's been nothing short of fantastic so far, with tremendous characters (both PC and NPC) all along. Alas that it's not been a smooth ride, but a real great experiment, in my opinion.

Well, my Hammerfast game was approved and I have started the pre-game thread. Stop on over in the setup section to post if you are interested in joining. Thanks again for everyone's enthusiastic support!

@guido_ca et al.: MapTools is definitely a life-saver. I'm using it pretty extensively in my Glimmering Through the Dream game as well as TokenTool for making the tokens and InitTool for keeping track of turns and effects and such. It's cut down the stress of running forum-based combat over weeks of real-time by at least half. @Thot: Well, I'll consider Scion! I don't want to overcommit so if I undercommit as a result don't shoot me. Rignt now I'm dreaming of World of Darkness, Eclipse Phase, and Song of Ice and Fire but I know my RPG eyes are sometimes bigger than my RPG stomach.

I am guessing that I'm one of a few Mac users. MapTools is so close to functional for me. I can make a map, place an object in the background layer, resize it, but when I put in something else, I can't go back to work on the first object. I have no doubt that it works great for Windows... something just isn't right with the port. When I can make decent maps, I'll be able to do much more here at RA.

Sure thing, MJ. I don't know either Eclipse Phase or Song of Ice and Fire, but I'm damn sure Scion trumps them anytime (for me... :P ). Let's not talk about RPG eyes here...
