Derrigan stands by his conviction, "These are my friends, my family. I won't let The Flame ruin my last chance to save them."Β He draws his bow and stands by his mother and sister, preparing to fight against all odds to defend them.

Derrigan will fire an arrow at one of the archers as soon as the battle begins, but he will allow a moment for diplomacy.

I truly cannot see any other course of action for Derrigan at this point. Saving his closest friend was his core motivation from the beginning. For all he knows, the vial will truly bring his friends to life and he has no love for the flame.

Sorry for the silence, team. I kind of let life get away from me a bit...

Nikos realises he has been watching this whole ensemble as if it were a stage drama. The artificer had never had much use for temple worship, though he remembered to pray to the Host when it was appropriate, and he held the typical Aundairian belief that religion went easily too far. He remembered his foster parents telling him as a child that prayer was like good wine: never wasted idly, never taken in anger, and only shared with good friends.

As Derrigan reaches for his newly ensorcelled bow, however, things suddenly become real. "You go too far!" Nikos says in a loud voice facing the Rector, then he turns to draw the Nuncio's gaze as well, "Both of you! This ceremony is conducted in good faith by willing participants! No crime has been shown here! As we told you in Aruldusk, Nuncio, this package was intended to be delivered and no one short of a royal decree can stop that. Now that it has been delivered, Rector, it is House policy that any allegations of illegal trafficking be addressed. I hate to interrupt your ceremony but since things have already come to a stop..." The courier takes a deep breath and puts on his most official expression. "Under the statues of the Korth Edicts*, I must ask you to produce documentation proving your church has legal claim to this item. This demand has the full backing of the government of Karrnath, as established in this very city ten centuries ago."

Underneath his cloak, Nikos still clutches his wand nervously.

Diplomacy: 31. Wahoo! That oughta do something!

*So, in Dragonmark, page 10, it says that during the Korth Edicts, Galifar "swore to protect the houses..." I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that this means House Orien can call on military intervention if it thinks its services are being used illegally. This being the case, I also don't think it's a stretch to assume this is a well-precedented situation.

"You would side with him!" The rector, astonished, points and accusatory finger squarely in the Nuncio's direction. "And stop this ceremony if a piece of paper cannot be produced! How cold hearted has the House of Orien become that you would condemn the fallen never to see another sunrise or to feel the embrace of a loved one again."

The crowd grows uneasy once the initial shock is over, with murmurs of disapproval directed towards the Nuncio and Nikos.

"You have your answer." The Nuncio says to Nikos across the hall but keeps his steady gaze on the rector. "He has neither the divine nor legal right to the artefact. It clearly belongs to the Silver Flame, as any of these idiots can see." He takes in the throng with a sneer. "I will not let it be used for evil. Now hand it over."

The rector turns to the dozen or so nobles assembled around the metallic obelisk, who are clearly upset with proceedings. "What do the gracious families of Karrnath say." He implores from his pulpit. "Should I give it to them?"

"No!"
One man cries, raising his fist. "Never!" Joins in a older lady. "Our right is greater than theirs." Shouts out another. "Don't let them do this rector." Soon they are all calling in the negative, clearly spelling out what they want to happen.

One of their number sidles up to Nikos and pushes a heavy pouch of coins into his hand. Under his breath he says, "If you somehow let the ceremony continue ten times that amount is yours. I must see my wife again." He looks into the courier's eyes, pleading.

You wouldn't have happened to have been a lawyer in a past life, would you MJ?

Nikos's intervention is like a bright ray of sunshine on a storm darkened day, showing they way through to Dioban.Β  As the crowd becomes rowdy Dioban mutters to the arificer "thank you." Whatever else happens, Nikos saw the correct course through this.

The growing restlessness sets Dioban on edge, and he tenses, ready to make good on his previous plan to snatch back the package.

Dioban can easily teleport to the rectors side, then to Nuncio to return the relic, but I assume a skill check would be needed to wrest the package free?

In a single round Dioban could Dimension Leap to teleport to Rector Searamoth's side and attempt to wrestle the vial from him. The first would require a move action, the second a standard action through the use of a Dex check.

Dioban wouldn't be able to use his second Dimension Leap until the round after that

Rogesh stands baffled by the course of events. Not the most social of persons he quickly rallies to the side of Nikos and their employer. Taking a defensive stance.

"You all heard the man, hand over the package till the proper legal claim can be established. Those who have been waiting can wait for another few days."

Β

A bit blunt but Rogesh not really a talker.

Ok, Dioban will have that as a readied action should the Rector refuse Rogesh's demand.

Sweat trickles from his brow asΒ Derrigan keeps his bow trained on the Nuncio, holding out the standoff while the diplomatics continue.Β "How do you know that the blood of your greatest hero would be used for evil? You would rather keep it under lock and key then allow us to save these heroes!"

Technically, Dioban would not be able to ready an action to do both the port AND the grab. However I could totally see him porting in during a surprise round or something.

While as a player I am totally wary of what plans are intended for the Vol, Derrigan sees no reason why this ceremony won't actually work. The Flame just want the relic for themselves and they don't care about his loved ones.

Kith: In all this time, has Derrigan learned whether the flame truly lay claim to this artifact?Β

As all the parties present are aware of one another, there would be no surprise round if someone tried something

Other than them saying it is theirs (from the Nuncio), Derrigan hasn't seen or heard anything that would allow the Silver Flame claim it as their own, above the claims of others

"They can't take it!" The older noblewoman cries out in response to Rogesh's call for legal proceedings to take precedence. "Once the Flame get's their hands on it I may never see my son again!"

At the other end of the chamber, the Nuncio largely ignores Rogesh's side conversation. "I don't care what your gullible dandies want priest. Your religion is a thinly veiled facade for evil no matter what kind of lies and promises you make to others." He briefly glances at Derrigan in disgust. "This is your last chance - hand it over now!"

"I put it to the congregation."
The rector implores the murmuring crowd. "What do the rest of you say? Shall we give up this life giving blood to a spiteful man blinded by hate?"

Many in the crowd shake their heads in the negative and speak out against doing so. Emboldened at their neighbour's defiance, others join in until there is a chorus of "No!"

"Then stand with us, my people."
The rector raises his arms in a encompassing gesture. "United we are strong, divided we will fall."

As it appears that the rector is not going to willing give up the relic, Dioban can take
his readied action (a dex check if you please Belabras, to pluck the vial out of the rector's hands)
