Welcome Aelth! You would be amazed at how many players and DMs ended up here for that very same reason. PbP is a bit different than tabletop gaming. It's a slower pace but the role play (rp) and game is much more in depth and has lots of layers. It's a great place to really develop a character or really develop that world you've always wanted to try. I hope to see you around in a game sometime.

You are both rational and emotional. You value creation and discovery, and feel strongly about what I create. At best, you're innovative and intuitive. At worst, you're scattered and unpredictable.

Welcome FlamingZelda3! You can get a good idea of the rp in the games by reading through a few game threads. My personal favorites to suggest would be Nightdrifter's Dragonlance game, any of Elora's games (even though they are all on hold until she returns), and Lin has a fun game filled with rp in it called Beyond the Vale. I could easily name 15 different games and am having to restrain myself to mention more great games. When reading, keep an eye on the date of the posts. This will give you a good idea of how quickly (or slowly) a game moves.

How active a game is depends on the DM and the players. A lot of us are in a few games, which allows us to play every day. If you are in only one game, there will be times when the game will post every day (or more, esp. when the game first starts) and times when you may find you only need to post once a week. The DM should specify which he expects when he/she puts up the rules in the pre-game section. I know this is not a definitive answer but I hope it helps.

thank you. um... how do you join a starting game? i thought that you go to set-up zone, but it looks like there is more to it than just asking to join.

If you are reading through a game thread and find yourself sucked in (happens to me all the time), you can PM the DM and ask to be put on the Waiting List. Often, what happens is if the game is at a critical spot like combat, you will take over for a character that has turned into an NPC. (RL can be hard on players!) Once the game reaches a spot where it is okay to trade out, you are often allowed to switch and insert your own character and the NPC'd character disappears through whatever handy trick the DM has up his sleeve. It's easy and you often don't have to wait very long on the Waiting List before getting into the actual game.

The set-up zone is a good place to get into a new game or an existing game that is looking for replacement players. In fact there are two games kicking off right now. Usually you just need to read through the DM's character creation rules for the game they're going to run and then submit a character w/a background based on those requirements. The DM will usually state the cut-off date for submissions and then make and post their selection after that date. It may help if you let the DM know that you are new to the community.

Also keep an eye on this thread  for games that are starting up or that need replacement players.

Speaking of a game in need of a couple replacement players, Jonathan Vagabond is looking for some people to join his Would Be Kingdom game. It is a great game to start with here. It is not top heavy with rp (those are my personal favorites) but it isn't top heavy with combat either. There is a nice blend and it is slow moving, which is helpful when just starting and getting used to how things work here. Just a thought.

Hello Folks,

My name is Tina.  Predominantly, I used to post by the name Snow Savant in the WotC CharOp & Rules forums many years ago (in the days of 3.0/3.5 era D&D).  I also played in 2 campaigns here at Real Adventures (Rilem's Maure Castle and Balthanon's STWTW - the latter of which is still runnin!).

The quality and consistency of PbP D&D here at Real Adventures pretty much trumps every other related forum I've seen as of late.  As a result, I'm interested in playing in another campaign!  Currently I've rejoined Bal's STWTW game and it's a lot of fun.  If any of you have any openings in a 3.5 Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk or Eberron campaign, I'd be interested joining.  Especially if it is at mid-to-high level play.

My posting rate is pretty much on the high end.  I greatly enjoy collaborative party/character buildcraft dynamics and immersive RP storytelling.  Also, I can't stress enough how much I enjoy playing in the Forgotten Realms.  If you need someone versed in strong FR lore & history ... then I'm your girl!

Thanks for your time and attention!

- Tina

Welcome Back Tina!

There are several games just starting up right now.  Take a look in the Setup Zone.
