As the weekend draws to a close here in San Diego, I find myself wandering around to the various members of the coverage crew, asking them a curious question: "Did I throw cards at you?"
Now, I'm usually pretty good about remembering game stories. But it should give you some insight into the hectic life of a Pro Tour coverage teamer that I have absolutely no idea who I threw cards at, or why, or what deck I was playing, or what deck he was playing, or what night it was, or indeed absolutely anything about the incident in question except this: I definitely threw cards at someone.
I'm not usually the card-throwing type, either. But when it's well past midnight, I've already worked twelve hours in a day, and I've jumped in on an exhaustion-hazed draft instead of getting some much-needed sleep, things can get a little punchy. And it's that same exhaustion haze that keeps me from remembering pretty much anything about an incident that happened an uncomfortably small number of hours before my morning alarm goes off.
I drafted blue-red. Maybe. I've done that two out of three drafts, so it's a safe bet. And it probably wasn't my second one, because that deck had three Plated Geopedes and three Goblin Bushwhackers and was totally sweet. It was probably my first blue-red deck, which had all the great blue tempo disruption and nowhere near enough creatures to back it up. I would slam down something scary and do some serious damage, only to have a Hideous End or a Burst Lightning leave me staring at a handful of lands.
I'm pretty sure I'd just swept the board with Chain Reaction. Yeah, that sounds right. Then my opponent... made me angry somehow. At first I thought it was coverage honcho Greg, but he doesn't remember it, and if it did happen I'm in no hurry to remind my not-quite-boss about it. Nate? Man, that guy. He sounds exactly like the kind of person I would throw cards at. But he doesn't remember it either.
I wandered over to another coverage draft in progress and started asking my curious question.
"BDM, did I throw cards at you?"
"Yes, you did."
"No, you didn't."
What a kidder.
So I still have no idea who I threw cards at. Definitely somebody. At some point this weekend. Maybe.
Let me know if it was you.
