"Javier, I think it's time you stepped up to the mark my friend.   Go and have a look at the camp fire.   Find out who it is.  Report back to us when you have some information.  And, of course, don't get seen."

Always prepared for the worst, Reynard straps his shield tightly to his left arm and loosens his longsword in its scabbard.

Javier nods and using the shadows and cover moves as close as he can to learn more about the camp fire and it's inhabitants.

Algaris casts his eyes at the campfire, certain that if someone were willing to build a fire seemingly admist a tangle of trails, he would do so only because he had comrades by his side. The gypsies might be willing to light such a fire if they were armed, but as the flames flicker in the distance, the mage's gut begins to tell him that this fire belongs to someone else. Algaris doesn't say a word as Javier vanishes into the shadows. The Viper merely begins to feel the stirring of his arcane abilities as he silently prepares himself for a possible battle in a few minutes.

MMORPGs, raking in money by the dumptruck full.  Many options, tons of fans across many audiences, massive resources allocated to development.

TTRPGs, dying product.  Squeaking out an existence that relys on low cost.  Fans fit primarily into a few small demographics.  R&D budgets small, often rushed to market and patched after deployment.

You're not really making much of an argument when you compare something to a MMORPG and assume people think that means bad.  Lets face it, they make the money, have the audience and the budget.  We here on this board are fans of TTRPGs but lets not try to pretend none of us play MMORPGs.

Given the laziness and morbid obsesity amongst D&Ders, being able to convince someone to get on their feet, do some heavy exercise, and use their words to make them be healthier must seem magical.

Nicolaus steps back, obviously embarassed that he'd taken a wrong turn. What had he led them into? He tips his ear to listen in the fire's direction. If this really was the gypsies, they'd know to put out the fire before going to sleep, and seeing as gypsies were known for being a bit noisy...

His hand instinctively reaches for his sheathed longsword, but he doesn't take it out. Best not to have a weapon drawn if you may need to be diplomatic -- it's an easy way to turn things from an unfriendly conversation to a terrible brawl.

Javier approaches the campfire undetected throug the tangled undergrowth.

Javier Show

You count 6 armed men sitting close to the fire. They could be gypsies from their ragged appearance, but their manner of speech sounds wrong. Two of them are gestulating wildly and speaking in raised whispers. Their words are difficult to catch, but you make out a few of them: "ransom" "Cluny' "nobles" "supposed to be in GOOD health!" "seven days"

Nicolaus and the rest of the group remains farther away from the campsite and can't make out any speech. Nicholaus's ears; however, being in proportion to the rest of his giant frame, picks up something else.

You faintly hear a wildly plaintive tune being played on a fiddle in a distinctive gypsy style. you could probably get a good enough bearing from the sound to find the gypsy camp if everyone stays quiet

Reynard decides to take the lead.  Drawing his sword he moves forward through the trees in the direction of the campsite.  Ready for anything he approaches the fire light and steps into the clearing.

Javier uses Reynard's approach to return to his previous hiding place so he's within range to launch a surprise attack if the need rises.
