Oh thank the gods, it wont have to be me thinks Carric, before responding "Be my guest Syga, I wont stand in your way. But come over here and have a look first."
Showing her what he had seen just below the surface he adds "I can't tell if it's rope or chain, but it must be tied to something..."

Syga wanders over to the side of the boat that Carric leads her to. "You saw something in the water you say? Let's have a look then." surprised that the spell caster was able to spot anything. She gleans over the boat to have a peek herself to try and spot what it was that Carric saw. Interaction

"I see it does appear to be something snagging the boat. A rope or chain of some sort. I guess I should go down with something to be able to cut it. I really do hope it's not a big pain, or that it actually is a chain." she says as she lets out a sigh. Turning back to Carric "Good job on spotting that mage. Here I thought you magic wielders were all..." she stops herself. "Nevermind." she finishes abruptly.

You see the same thing that Carric did. The murkiness of the water and the bit of depth it is at makes it difficult to identify, but if you were to guess, you would say it was probably a chain as opposed to a rope. It seems to be no more than two feet below the surface of the water. The current of the river will not be a major issue if anyone jumps in to investigate further.

" I can try to cut through it with a spell if it's a rope. If it's a chain though...we'll just have to get wet." Trenon says, as he peers over the side of the boat. "Does anyone have a dagger I can borrow?"

Through the murkiness of the water it's hard to tell, but the lack of success over several minutes leads you to believe it is, indeed, a chain.

While Syga, Carric, and Trenon tend to the matter of the chain, Isan procures some rope from the ship's hold and binds the unconscious bandit. He whistles a popular hymn to Tempus as he flips the bandit onto his stomach and ties his hands behind his back, before moving on to his bind his ankles.
When the job is done, Isan flips the man onto his back and props his head up into as comfortable a position as possible. The priest is ready to interrogate the bandit.
"This one must know something of use. We should be thorough in our questioning, and make him realize he's at our mercy. He's all alone and his friends aren't likely going to look into how he's doing; he will talk."

Until you've had an in-law tell you your choice of game was stupid, and just Warcraft on paper, and dumbed down for dumber players who can't handle a real RPG, you haven't lived.
You haven't lived.
Lady and gentlemen.... I present to you the Edition War without Contrition, the War of the Web, the Mighty Match-up!
We're using standard edition war rules. No posts of substance. Do not read the other person's posts with comprehension. Make frequent comparison to video games, MMOs, and CCGs. Use the words "fallacy" and "straw man", incorrectly and often. Passive aggressiveness gets you extra points and asking misleading and inflammatory questions is mandatory. If you're getting tired, just declare victory and leave the thread. Wait for the buzzer... and....
One, two, three, four, I declare Edition War Five, six, seven eight, I use the web to
Go!
D&D should not return to the days of blindfolding the DM and players. No tips on encounter power? No mention of expected party roles? No true meaning of level due to different level charts or tiered classes? Please, let's not sacrifice clear, helpful rules guidelines in favour of catering to the delicate sensibilities of the few who have problems with the ascetics of anything other than what they are familiar with.
Just a quick note on the MMORPG as an insult comparison...
MMORPGs, raking in money by the dumptruck full. Many options, tons of fans across many audiences, massive resources allocated to development.
TTRPGs, dying product. Squeaking out an existence that relys on low cost. Fans fit primarily into a few small demographics. R&D budgets small, often rushed to market and patched after deployment.
You're not really making much of an argument when you compare something to a MMORPG and assume people think that means bad. Lets face it, they make the money, have the audience and the budget. We here on this board are fans of TTRPGs but lets not try to pretend none of us play MMORPGs.
Adding options at the system level is good. Adding options at the table level is hard.
Removing options at the system level is bad. Removing options at the table level is easy.
This is not complicated.
Something like Tactical Shift is more magical than martial healing.
Telling someone to move over a few feet is magical now? :|
I weep for this generation.
Given the laziness and morbid obsesity amongst D&Ders, being able to convince someone to get on their feet, do some heavy exercise, and use their words to make them be healthier must seem magical.

Illustrianna walks up the stairs to Isan and his awakened pet. She looks down and smiles. With calm efficiency, she adds "If you continue to move, I will run you through and you will not have the chance to live a life again. So please, for your own sake, stop this infernal writhing."

The bound man, a human, looks up at Illustrianna and smiles a wide, mostly-toothless grin, then spits a thick glob of mucous on her boot. "Do whatever you want. Were I untied you wouldn't be so arrogant. If running through a man who is tied up is your idea of bravery, then maybe you should go back home and try gardening or cooking. Looks like it would suit you better."

Illustrianna looks to the man incredulously. She rips her scimitar from the sheath and presses it against his throat, drawing a thin line of blood. "Were you untied, I'd meet you with spell and fire. I am being merciful, curr, and you should do well to remember who has the sword in this situation." She presses harder with her sword, causes slightly more pain, but not much. She doesn't want to kill their charge. "Perhaps I shall take up cooking, and I'll make utensils from your bones..."
