Mouse strikes a defensive pose while Gerik fires an arrow at the Rat wizard. The arrowhead sinks into his knee, knocking it out of joint and he falls to the ground with a howl. Muttering to himself, the wizard pushes the kneecap back into place and rises once more, testing it gingerly. He hurls a sub-audible sonic wave that blasts Kira and Gerik back against the wall. The other rat man tries to sink his teeth into the meditating Mouse, but the monk moves just the barest minimum required to avoid the snapping teeth. The rat man's fetid breath has an almost-recognizable scent to it. It brings to mind something from below the boards of Menlo's place, during a period of great turmoil, great sickness. Lin sighs with relief as the big brute staggers back to the group, and she quickly walks up next to Suane. Dwayna's holy light fills her as she guides the holy deity to heal Vindig's wounds, even removing some scars as the man is bathed in divine healing energy.
The Healer smiles as she looks at the fully refreshed brute. He almost looks cleaner, somehow, after Dwayna's touch, ready to take on the last of the vile rats. Satisfied, Lin turns her eyes on the particularly ugly one standing right in front of Vindig and Uther. She knows Dwayna will not let her harm the creature, so instead she places Her mark on it. Her feet part from the ground almost a foot as she twists in the air, pointing Dwayna's holy symbol at the creature and making a shimmering round mark appear directly above it. When she settles back down onto the ground, Lin notices one of the group still has not returned. Even worse, the little thief has disappeared from view! Vindig quickly sizes up the two remaining ratmen. One is close to death, life hanging by a thread - the other looked in good health and was thrashing amongst his new friends.
There is no challenge in putting the weak one down. Vindig sprints into the room and between the two rogues, huge hammer raised to his side during his approach. When he gets within range he swings the hammer sideways - Uther's hair riplping from the passing air as the hammer swings just above his head. The head of the massive weapon lands with a sickening crunch in the Ratman's chest. Vindig pulls back his hammer with an audible squelch as the ratman looks down incredulously at its crushed ribcage. Kira dazedly wipes away the trickle of blood crawling slowly down her neck from her ear. She waits for a moment to see if her ears will quit ringing. When they don't, she shrugs and pulls out more daggers. Running towards the cowering rat man, she punches one of the blades into him, the other going wide due to her being off balance.

As the final rat falls, Kira already begins to feel an itch at the site of the rat bite. The skin is red and aggravated. But she doesn't have time for that at the moment. Her first thought is to the other humans still milling around, waiting to see if the assailants continue their slaughter. As the confusion mounts, it becomes clear that the crowd just wants to go home. Eventually, everyone settles down and a grizzled old farmer seems to be volunteered forward (or did everyone else move back?) to act as spokesman.
Mechanics Show Enemies are all dead. Short Rest.
Kira rubs at the bite, annoyed that one got that close. She moves forward to greet the old man once she sees that he seems to want to talk instead of fight. "My name is Kira. I won't hurt you as long as you don't make a move against me. Why are you here? Who brought you here? And what is all this about?" She waves a hand at the cells around them and the bodies of the slain ratmen.
Gerik stays quiet, intent on listening to the old man's response. He sheaths his last arrows and reties the quiver onto his hip; it had nearly fallen off when his legs had buckled in the battle. Leaning on his massive bow, he catches his breath. Something still felt different about him. Was it the experiments? Had they changed him? The questions run through his mind as he stands near the old man, facing the newcomers.
The mouse takes a moment, noticing the fight is over, to hold up the prayer beads around his neck and whisper a few words. He closes his eyes and onlookers can tell he's focusing on some form of spiritual endeavor.
As the last rat man falls and the confusion subsides, Vindig throws his arms wide into the air.
"Rat men gone! You, now FREE! HAW! Next time though, you be helping the fighting, yes? Is good though, left more for Vindig!" He turns his back as Kira begins the questioning, knowing that leaving the talking to his smaller friends would bear more fruit. He clomps over to the strange mouse man, who, to Vindig, looked to be cleaning his necklace. A massive, heavy hand claps down on the thing's shoulder, interrupting his prayers. "Friendly mouse was brave! Others squeak in fear, Mouse fights for freedom!" He points over to Gerik, who can't help but notice the comically oversized gesturing. "Bow Man too. Vengeance you will be getting for the chains. Join Vindig and friends!"
Suane readies another arrow on the string, turning towards the rooms entrance, then waits on what the old man knows before deciding on any further action.
"Everyone has a different story, but it all boils down the same. We were lured in - I was promised a job as head groundskeeper. Easy hours, high pay; shoulda known it was too good to be true. Then that one," he points over to the fallen Pinched Man, "brought us down here and locked us up." He turns several times, looking the room over as if trying to makes sense of something. "I think he was trying to turn us all into..." he points again, this time to one of the wererats, "that."
"There were quite a few that were staged outside when I was brought in. Are they still there?"
The mouse jumps a bit when Vindig's hand clamps down on his shoulder, but he calms down quickly. "Thank you." he says, letting go of his prayer beads. "But I am not overly concerned with vengeance. I only wish to make sure that whatever was happening here is stopped, and then I have my own quest to get back to. I have been sidetracked long enough. I may have missed her already."
Suane shoots a quick look at the old man.
Do you know what they did to try to turn you into ratmen?
The farmer shrugs apologetically. "It was a bunch of magical mumbo-jumbo. He'd strap people to the table, pull out some rats, do some sing-song stuff, and then...then there was screaming. The people came back...changed. The more times he took them, the more rat-like they became. The ones that were led out had each been worked on for months."
She nods. That probably won't be easily reversible. If any of you should begin to feel a sudden change in your condition try to tell us quickly before any harm can be done.
She looks to the rest of her original group. You think we should go on and look for what we came for or better retreat for the moment?
Vindig nodded at the Mouse. He personally would have torn down the enitre building if he were treated in such a fashion, but to each their own.
At least Mouse fought with us instead of cowering. On listening to the farmer, Vindig looks down, frowning at the rat-man with the concave chest; a bloody mess was all that remained from where his hammer had struck. "Rat men made do this?" A twinge of guilt felt at killing the men, who had once been innocent, quickly turned into rage. "Men who do this, they DIE. Hide like babies, make others fight, lose selves." He hefts his hammer in both hands and looks to the stairs. Vindig heads for them, and moves to ascend them unless anyone stops him. "Vindig CRUSH baby-men! Be killing the rat men no more, I think, if can do."
"Hold on a second there big man," Kira calls weakly. She is beginning to feel a bit woozy, and not liking it one bit. "If you go charging in like a raging bull, they'll hear you and some of them may get away. You don't want that, do you? We want to get them all...make them all pay."
The little thief wobbles a bit, unsteady on her feet. The bite throbs and burns. She turns towards the healer and says wearily, "Lin? I think I got a problem..."
Suane leaves the thief to Lin and with a last quick look at the entrance turns over the adjoining rooms for any kind of information on what they did exactly, having somewhat of a bad feeling.
"You." Gerik points at the rogue, noticing her favoring a leg. "You were bit, weren't you? I saw." He coolly makes his way over to her. "These experiements seemed to... have an effect on me. I'd hate for the same to happen to you, after being bitten by one of those things. Lin, I believe she called you. Can you help this woman?" He holds her arm, stabling her as he notices she is wobbling a bit.
"And yes. Vindig, you are called. I seek retribution for what they did to us. The only reward deserved of such men that experiment with free life so casually is a hasty death. I'm a woodsman. I am used to the quick death of creatures. But what they did to us... this is nothing of the sort. This was cold-hearted torture, with no respect to these peoples' lives, including mine." "The effects of the experiements I am still figuring out, but I have no doubt you'd find that having a few more arrows volleyed into the fray may be quite relieving. This last battle was a close call. Looks like you could use my help."
Lin bites her lip as she studies the wound on Kira's arm. Begging her Patron for some help, she holds her breath for a moment before her eyes widen. There's nothing Dwayna can do for her friend - it's some sort of curse. She racks her brain for any mundane treatments, something to treat the wound and anything lingering inside. Melora was always better at the poultices. She had to Kira to turn back, and now.
"Sir," she calls to the farmer. "We didn't see any of those Rats outside. Are you sure...?" She's trying to keep the edge of worry out of her voice as she wraps the wound up. Hopefully Kira will feel better thinking that Lin did something. Sometimes a good attitude is all it takes to fight off infection. At least she hoped so, because that's all she had to go on right now. "They were staging and arming - I'm sure of it. Looked like they would be heading south toward Blue Rose." Lin looks up, her eyes wide. Then she starts nodding slowly to herself. That'll do. "Kira, listen to me, this is important. We need you to get back to Blue Rose as fast as possible. Skinner must be warned. Then, you might as well get Melora to look at that." Lin leans in close, feeling guilty about exploiting the rogue's emotions like this, but hoping to close the sale. "Kira, Graeme, Grayson...all of them, are in danger."
Kira leans on Gerik for a moment, grateful for the help. The ratman had bit her on the arm, but she was still weak kneed from the last thunderous blast that had knocked her against the wall. She stood still while Lin carefully wrapped her wound, but she could tell that the healer was more worried than she let on. Kira knew something bad had happened to her.
When Lin leaned in close to ask her to turn back, the little thief hesitated for a moment. If she could stay on and help erradicate the threat here, at the source... But feeling the way she does, Kira knows that she would be no good in a fight. She might barely be able to make it back to Blue Rose on her own. That thought frightens her -- that she might not get home to Graeme or her brother. She hates feeling weak, despises it, but she knew she would need help. She looked around to see which of her companions would think the least of it and settled on Tim. "You and me, then, burn boy. We've got to go to Blue Rose and warn them like Lin says. Otherwise, the whole town could be in danger of turning into these things." She looks to Lin, who nods slightly. Bending towards the healer so that their heads nearly touch, she whispers, "How long do I have?"
"Oh...I'm sure you'll be fine. Took months for anything to happen to those others," she says, not really sure if her facts are straight, but needing to sound sure for her friend. Some of the former prisoners have found the window and are making their way out.
"Well, come on Tim. The sooner we get started, the sooner we get to Blue Rose to warn everyone." Kira nods to the others, feeling somewhat guilty for leaving them, but that was overshadowed by the joy welling inside of her at the thought of seeing Graeme again. "Take care of yourselves."
The little thief heads to the window and pulls herself through, following the others into the night.
The mouse is busy with Vindig and Gerik as the girls go over Kira's leg. He looks up at Gerik. "You were here longer than I. I never saw these experiments. What are we in for? The spirits here are mad with rage and pain, but I can't get a straight answer from them."
Vindig stops mid stride towars the stairs to lay a hand on Kira's shoulder as she begins to hoist herself through the window. When she turns to him, he levels his eyes on hers and makes a muscle with his bicep.
"Kira strong. Stronger than little rat man bite. Vindig see you at this pretty flower house." He frowns as he watches her leave. He couldn't protect all of the little ladies, especially if they split up.
"I can't say I know. I was taken by a few burly men, stronger than I, and thrown into the cell. Was it... a few weeks ago? I couldn't know for sure. But you... you take the form of a rodent but speak and stand like a human. Were you this form before the experiments? I'm curious."
As the small rogue pulls her way through the window, he calls out to her: "Luck be with you, milady. May we meet again." Gerik looks at the window for a moment after she is gone, a little worried for her wound. It looked bad. Can't do anything about that now. He turns to the massive figure beside him. "Well, Vindig. Shall we and the rest of your friends find these terrible men? I've got quite the bone to pick with their sorry hides." He grins.
Vindig thinks of the wound Kira had taken, and the innocent men - twisted by torture - he had killed. His response is unusually flat for the big man.
"Vindig break bones and strip hide. We be going now. If we need to do the sneaking, tell Vindig, but no need. Rat-men-makers feel fear before feel death."
Now hold on for a second! We don't even know who was involved in this and who not, we might just be killing innocent household staff here, especially if their "army" is already on its way to Blue Rose. The ones responsible might very well be leading it.
Vindig turns cold, hard eyes on Suane.
"Say Rat-men-makers. They die, and quick if lucky. Vindig no feel pity for these peoples, but no kill little weaklings that serve to live. They know though. They share this. Vindig will hurt them, bad, if have to."

Uther merely glared at everything and everyone. It would do little good now to point out that the shrieking and screaming and bellowing had, without a doubt, alerted any and everyone in the house. So much for his implicit instructions to do this quietly and focus on the reason they were there. Not a bunch of filthy squeal and nippers. There would be a bloody and permanent accounting coming soon if the black-hearted little man had his way. 'What fer play the kettle and stewpot and flip and squat in the brighters now.' He spent a few extra moments on the pinched man and slid his rondel blade up into the man's diaphragm in case the man had not already expired.
Rising from his task, he cleaned his blades off absently with his no longer new cloak and listened to the sing-song and pattering of the party and the no doubt tainted former slaves. Uther spat at the dark luck of the departure of Kira and the Loon and his hellish coney. Not that he'd given a pair of godsballs about the lot he told himself. Vindig charges in and slams into the back of the desert warrior, drawing a grunt from the whirling soldier. Luckily, he has support and a whip lashes out from around the corner. The leather feels silky smooth, obviously well-oiled and lovingly cared for, as it wraps around Vindig's throat. The smell of the lard used to keep the leather supple is oddly appealing to the savage warrior though drastically out of place. Mouse is harried by a pair of meaty paws, dodging one but unable to avoid the other. Vindig's movement is restricted from the lasso around his throat and he is unable to dodge the two calloused fists headed his way. Mechanics Show Note: In looking back, you notice that Lin is gone. "It be me round at the bones now ye right bastard so squeal for me right fine like the wee oinker ye be." As Mouse leg whips most of the combatants, Uther pieces Donthar's diaphragm. The big man slumps in a bubbling whisper. The specter of death renews Uther's will to live, and the rogue has that gleam in his eye again. Sulaja rolls with Mouse's kick and leaps up onto the table. His first cut over Vindig's head and Suane thinks to yell a word of warning, but with the lasso around the wild man's throat, she sees that there isn't anywhere he can go anyway. The spirits of the damed continue to rely on the mouse monk, for the most part. They seem to fear manifesting without his rage. In more than one way, the spirits follow this Mouse, who has yet to give you his Name. As Vindig prepares for his next strike, he hears a dozen voices in his ear. Each of them tells him to strike true, indeed, the voices urge him on to greatness. Vindig may not be used to hearing the dead, but with the mouse near, he hears them now, urging him to be their champion, to avenge their wrongful agonies, their horrific deaths.

It is with great sorrow that I have to put this game on hold. As some of you know, since this game was started I've changed jobs to one that has a lot more travel (on the order of one week out of every three) and I've had a second child. I don't have enough time to give this game the attention it deserves. I hope to restart it in the future once things settle down. Mouse's kick sends Relend reeling backwards, slamming his head against the wall , causing him to crumple to the ground. Gerik turns quickly, firing at Skoroff rather than Relend. The first arrow pierces him in the chest and Skoroff also collapses, bleeding onto the floor. The team makes their way upstairs and rummages through the office they find there. Finding the book that they were sent after, the group prepares to make their way back to Blue Rose. Suane notices some other planning papers on the desk. She shows them to the others. Vindig recognizes the makings of battle plans, Blue Rose the obvious target, while Uther finds some additional maps with areas much further Northeast. Mouse finds notes on the state of the army that has been unleashed and is appalled at the size of the force - both because of the number of people twisted through the Pinched Man's experiments and the carnage awaiting Blue Rose when the army arrives. Gerik notes that the paths indicated are not the most direct, but will allow for the army of Ratmen to get extremely close before they are likely to be discovered. That means that there is a chance for the party to reach the city before the Ratmen. Hurrying out of the house, the party soon catches up with Tim, Kira, and Lin. Gerik takes the lead to get everyone back to the House of Names quickly and safely. After delivering the book to Skinner and explaining the situation, the party is dismissed while meetings are arranged between the heads of Houses to discuss the coming invasion.
