The Drunk Duck

This is the In-Character thread for the members of FLAW operating out of The Drunk Duck

Link to the OOC Thread:  OOC  Thread

Campaign Outline

You  are one of the co-owners of a tavern named The Drunk Duck in the port  town of Juniper. The tavern itself is a grounded ship on a hill  overlooking the docks. Its history is a tale every citizen of the town  knows well.

The  Drunk Duck was a pirate vessel that often docked in Juniper for the  crew to spend their ill-gotten gains. Over the years it became a near  permanent fixture in the port town, to the point that many wondered if  it was still seaworthy. When the old harbor master died suddenly, his  replacement demanded that the ship be removed from the harbor in one day  or he would toss the crew in prison and fine them heavily. The next  morning, the harbor master stepped out of bed to see that The Drunk Duck  was indeed out of the harbor...and was now at its permanent resting  place; the top of Potter's Hill. How the crew actually got it up there  in one night no one really knows, although there are rumors aplenty.  Regardless, it was renovated into a tavern twenty years ago and has  served numerous owners in its time. You are the most recent, along with  the other members of you group.

However  you got here, you are now part of a group of professional treasure  hunters for hire, all co-owners of The Drunk Duck. Your fees aren't  cheap, but you guarantee results. So far, your record is flawless. As  word of your success gets around, more powerful forces have begun to  take an interest in your work. Things are about to get interesting, and  that's saying quite a lot around here...

Juniper

Juniper is a port city of 10,000 souls located on the eastern coast of the Forsberg region. It is an independent city-state, boasting its own militia and navy. It is also a trade hub, and a staggering amount of cargo is hauled across the docks every year. The city is ruled by the Harbor Master, currently one Fargrim Bornholm, a rich dwarven merchant who took control 20 years ago when the previous Harbor Master died under mysterious circumstances. Any complaints about the change were silenced when Fargrim strung up his ten greatest opponents by their thumbs and left them hanging above the docks until all that was left was bleached bone. He has turned out to be a surprisingly efficient Harbor Master, and times have been good of late.

His one peeve, however, is the existence of The Drunk Duck. He cannot legally remove it, but is always looking for ways to shut it down. In 20 years, he's gotten close a few times, but the owners always find some loophole or another.

The Drunk Duck

Everyone on the eastern coast has heard of The Drunk Duck. It has achieved near legendary status, especially among the less than legal portion of the population, and you are not considered to have visited Juniper until you stop by the tavern for a drink and a brawl.

While the ownership of the tavern is as fickle as the winds, a dwarf named Scuttle is a permanent fixture. He runs the business side of the tavern, ordering supplies, keeping track of employees, and generally keeping the place running. Some say he was one of the original crew members of The Lucky Duck, but if so, he's not talking. Regardless, he has shown himself to be trustworthy, and manages the safe in the lowest deck where some of you doubtlessly keep your earnings.

The Surrounding Region

Forsberg is rugged country, with swamplands near the coast melding into forests further west.  There is Roses fifty miles to the north, and Lords thirty miles south. The West Road runs through the swamplands all the way to Rust, two hundred miles west. The Kirin Sea is the lifeblood of Juniper. Wracked by fierce cyclones during the summer and fall, an terrible icestorms in winter and early spring, it has claimed more lives than anyone can keep track of. Across the sea is a land called Thresh. Little is known about the savage jungle continent except that its inhabitants pay well for slaves, and always pay in pure gold.

Guidelines Show

As a general rule, please be courteous to both me and the other players at all times. Mistakes  will be made. Try to solve them peacefully.

Tools

I will be using maptools for all combats. Your token will represent your character on the map. I will update the map and repost it after each player's turn.

Rolling:

Use Invisible Castle for all die rolling.

When not in combat, a skill challenge, or otherwise under duress,  you may always take 10 on a skill check. Note that if you choose to do  this, you may not roll, and if you choose to roll instead, you may not  take 10. I will always tell you if you are in a skill challenge.

Posting and Combat:

Please use your chosen text color when speaking or thinking. Bold is for speaking, Italics for thoughts and regular text for actions. When in combat, please refrain from posting actions until I have responded to the last action. If you have any questions or disagreements with me or another player, post in the OOC thread or send me a PM.

I expect people to check in at least twice a day. I will try to give heads up when I cannot post for an extended period, and I expect players to do the same.

When combat starts, I will be rolling initiative for all players to speed things up. If you have a specific immediate or other out of turn action you want to use, please make note of it on your turn. I will roll them for you when it is triggered.

Whenever you take your turn, please post your combat statblock, updating any relevent information.

If you have not posted your action in 24 hours on your turn when in combat or a skill challenge, I will take your turn for you.

Waiting List:

If I have no contact from a player for a week or more and they have not sent me a message explaining why, I will open recruitment. Those on the waiting list automatically get first choice.

Time Zone:

I use US Central Time (GMT -6). I generally post between 10AM and Midnight. If you post something after midnight, chances are I will not respond until the next morning. If this changes for any reason, I will let you know.

Life is good.

It has been a week since you finished your last contract. While it wasn't the easiest of tasks to find and extract the Tiger's Eye from the Duerger underneath the Deepiron mountains, it was certainly lucrative. For a week, you have been enjoying the bounty of your success. Business is booming at The Drunk Duck, and the money and drink are flowing.

Life is good.

It has been a week since you had to scramble through dank passageways, battle horrible aberrations, and escape an enraged fire giant. It has been a week since your life was in any significant danger. The thought fades into the back of your mind as a drunken customer slaps you companionably on the back, and another drink is placed in front of you as Scuttle accepts another handful of coins from a rich looking merchant.

Life is good.

And then the door opens, and in steps an Eladrin lady with silver hair flowing beneath her shoulders and matching eyes. Gold and silver jewels line her arms, and a great diamond lays in the center of a circlet wrapped around her head. She looks a little...disconcerted by the state of the tavern, but recovers quickly. Before she speaks, you know that your reverie is over. It was nice while it lasted.

I am here to inquire about the services of the acquisition group known as FLAW.”

Her voice is about as you'd expect. Like delicate crystal chimes. It seems out of place here. The tavern grows quiet as all eyes turn to look at the newcomer. She takes their looks in stride. You've got to give her credit where its due. Some of your customers are from the...rough side of town.

Well? I am not one to be kept waiting.”

Dougan studies the woman carefully. Brave woman to come in here unescorted. Brave and rich by the looks of it. I think I'll let someone smoother make the first contact.

Perception check to see if there's anything about the woman that's not immediately obvious. Looks like anything wrong would have to be REALLY obvious...

You eye the Eladrin Lady up and down. She has on a delicate silver gown that shimmers in the light. Her skin is smooth and white, and as you watch a slight mist appears in front of her mouth as she breaths out, as if it were cool. She stands straight, haughty even, without a hint of fear as she gazes around the room, awaiting a response.

Dressed in his finer clothing, ofcourse bearing the colors and symbols of Avandra, Cham approaches the lady in waiting.

"Please. Come with me to a nearby table, where we can talk more discreetly." Cham points to a private booth near the rear where the rest of the group is sitting.

We've all been chatting it up, while carousing a game at our table. Although owners of the Drunk Duck, we like to involve ourselves with our patrons, and sit amongst them.

Assuming she follows me, I lead her to this booth and ask her to sit.

"How can we be of service to you?" asks Cham Broddii.

OOC-Not sure a roll is needed. If so, see in spoiler

I forgot to put this in the intro. When not in combat, a skill challenge, or otherwise under duress, you may always take 10 on a skill check. Note that if you choose to do this, you may not roll, and if you choose to roll instead, you may not take 10. I will always tell you if you are in a skill challenge.

Also: When posting, only post what your character is saying or thinking in your specific color. Everything else should be in black to make it more readable. I apologize that I made it unclear.

The lady gives a slight nod of her head and takes a seat. Scuttle gestures to two guards who take up a position near the table, watching for ease droppers.

"I have heard tales of your success. I hope they were not over exaggerated.

There is an item of...great importance to me that I need recovered. I have recently come to the knowledge of its location. I am willing provide compensation for its retrieval."

Chef Borris jerks awake in his chair in the kitchen from a slightly drunken nap at the smell of his roast burning and spills what's left of his glass of grappa into his lap.  Cursing as he simultaniously tries to dry his pants and thrash about looking for his tongs to pull the flaming meat from the hearth.  "DAMMIT HAM!" He shouts looking for his assistant before remembering he'd given him the day off.  "Goblin holiday, my left cheek."  he grumbles as he pulls out the roast and slams it on the cutting board.  Looking around for the skullery boy he predictably spies him in the common room flirting with the serving wench.  That's when he spots the eladrin lady walking in.  'Hmmm, there's a tall drink of water, could use a few more pounds maybe I should offer her something.'  Looking back at the charred remains of the roast he reconsiders as he pulls of his apron and saunters over to the booth, nearly knocking the boy over as he passes him flirting.  "Hey Turkey, get in there and scrape the char off a that meat.  It's yer dinner, so take a little extra off, but leave some for the guests."

He presents a hand to the eladrin but reconsiders as he sees its greasy state and bows smiling a big toothesome grin. After he introduces himself he says,  "Item, eh?  Well that's what we do.   Tell us a little about this item, how big is it?  Who else wants it?  How far do we need to travel and where's it need to go?" Then seeing a table of half empty glasses, his smile wavers.  "Oh, I apologize for our rudeness, lady.  Would you care for a drink, my friend Mr. Ironforge here makes an excellent ale that while strong is crisp and refreshing."

While she answers he isn't really paying attention to the details but rather to her body language trying to see if he can extract some info that she may be withholding.

Kava, unlike most in the tavern, doesn't notice the eladrin right away, his thoughts dwelling on whether a dueagar king was a frightening enough villain for his newest tale.  He snaps out of his daydream, the converstaion already underway.

My Dearest Lady, it is our honor and privledge to aid others in endeavors just as you describe.  However, you should know upfront that anonyminty does require an additional fee.  Perhaps some introductions would allow us to conduct our business with more ease.  My name is Kava, a pleasure.

Kava extends his hand in greeting, if she accepts he will politely(and gently) kiss her hand in turn.

This charming man, he says motioning to the half-orc, is Borris, the finest chef in the entire drunk duck, Kava eyes the chef with a toothy smirk.  Then he continues his gesture to include the Gith, and you have met Cham as well i see.  I expect the others will join us shortly.

Borris-Insight Show

As you watch her talk you realize that there is something...off about her. You havn't an inkling what it is, but you just have a gut feeling. A different kind of gut feeling than normal at least.

The lady recoils visibly as the bosterous half orc assaults her with questions. She waves off his inquiry of a drink, and turns to Kava's voice.

The lady smiles at Kava's introduction and allows him to take her hand.

"I am glad to see that decency is not all lost in this place. Unfortunately, Mr. Kava, I am not at liberty to give my name. I am afraid it would endager us both. It is better if you know me simply as...Siverin. Yes, that will do.

I would prefer if all of you were present before I describe what it is you will be seeking. I do hate having to repeat myself."

I will not be back on until later tonight. Feel free to describe anything your character might be doing in the meantime.

Dougan comes away from the bar, taking the tray of drinks from the bartender. In his hand the sizable tray looks like a salad plate.

He serves each of his companions their regular drink nodding to them as he does so. He then carefully places a glass of sweet ice wine before the Eladrin lady.

There is an enormous chair near FLAW's private booth, the only one in the bar large enough to fit his bulk, by this point all of the regular patrons know better than to sit in it. He folds himself into the chair and takes up a small glass of brandy with two fingers. He sips delicately, and smiles at the lady.

"Greetings Siverin, I am Dougan. I am interested in this job you have. If it pays good, we can work something out. We will need to know more though."
