Heh, funny. I don't typically allow repeated skill checks like that. You get one chance to intimidate him. Roll badly, and you aren't doing much intimidating unless something changes. ( A good example of a change would be threatenng to beat some one up, then drawing a weapon and threatening something a bit more painful.
indeed, one roll for NPC influencing, and another when things have changed, or another day passes. with accounting for what exactly has changed and previous failures

any suggestions for tools that a DM can use to expedite combat? i am thinking if we can coincide the group's online times, we could use a group chat on a program like AIM and a shared Google Wave spreadsheet for the grid (making it alot closer to face-to-face pacing during combats); but that depends largely on devotion of the group to such an idea. what else could we do in place of that or the same old post a grid up, and do post by post?

If you and your goup are truly dedicated, you could probably manage with MapTool. I've used it to run for a group before. On another note, I'm going to offer this. Here is a link to download a sample notepad map, complete with Map Key and initiative block. www.4shared.com/file/215399765/b172bd76/...Also within the file is a blank map template, which you are welcome to use. This is the standard format I use for running my games. It difficult to deal with non-5ft thick walls unfortunately, and multiple levels can require some explanation, but it's otherwise simple to do and can be managed on even low quality PCs (I should know, I learned it on desktop running Windows ME).

This is a great guide for DM's that want to take some grind out of their combats, or players that may want to subtely email the link to their DMs: www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discus...It's got a lot of the common solutions, as well as some creative ones (such as different ways to use minions).
