Where is the love for Lukasz?
      November 20, 2012 10:21 PM PST
Hieronymus Bosch's demons are fairly Far Realm to me, not unlike D&D obyriths like the sibriex, ekolid, or Obox-ob. Compared to the typical devils and demons of D&D, yes, they are scarier, and I think it's because of HOW the monster/human/inanimate shapes are combined:
Not scary: keeping all the human regions (face, arms, legs, torso) in about the same positions they are on a human.
Scary: thwart that familiar lay-out. Give it a human face, but put it in places that shouldn't...

Should all elves be the same body type? No, of course not. Should some elves be fat? Yes. But What is fat for an elf? It isn't the same as what is fat for a human or a dwarf. An Obese elf may well have a similar body type to a plump human.
Just look at real world animals... I'll use different breeds of dogs for examples. A fat greyhound isn't very fat compared to a bulldog. .. it is still fat for its breed but the "natural" body shape of a greyhound is so thin to begin with that...

I would love to see variations in bodytypes among all non-humans, not just the standards like dwarve and elf. I think the tendency to label any somewhat significant variation a subtype to be kinda ridiculous. Races should be allowed some realistic variation while still being consider part of the same group of elves or lizardmen. consideration should always be taken to what their specific race ideal is though, lest they lose the uniqueness that makes them an identifiably non-human race.

For me Goblins should be like the ones depicted as in the Magic the Gathering universe.
For the little ones, The Goblin Marauder, Goblin War Strike or Goblin Psychopath by Pete Venters, maybe like The Goblin Brawler by Heather Hudson or The Goblin Warchief by Tim Hildebrandt,
One of my favorites is the painting art for the "Goblin Elite Infantry" by Robert Bliss. They look mean and badass! Long pointy ears with long and sharp nose; guess this model would fill the Hobgoblin, just add...

I know this is several months old now, but I wanted to drop in saying the picture in the end is pretty great, but I'd prefer the bugbear to be fatter.

IMO : The most important is the rules, definely, but I just LOVE the drawings.... you may put a whole book just of them for me... LOL ... seriously, I love them... and DRAGONS.

if i can't read it, then i look at the pretty pictures then toss it aside. i need hard usable data to add to my game. fluff should only be used to augment a product, not overwhelm it. case in point the atlas of dragonlance, pretty, but useless.

I think the old ogre-specific head was better.

People not familiar with D&D lore might interpret this as a cave troll, remembering LotR. I'm not sure if this is your concern.

      "whimsical art style"
Watch my non-whimsical money stay in my more realistic pocket.
You may have went off in a different direction for this round of cards.... I think you lost your way.
Let me reach in my DM bag and find you a +3 Sextant of Location so you can point it at the bright star we call "Lockwood" to get things back on course.

gnolls are one of my favorite threats as a DM.but the ultimate is giant wasps that try killing the characters to feed to there young.
      December 16, 2012 10:42 PM PST
In my opinion, there are a few things the wrong with this gnoll; a) the little braids near the ear, need to go, this is, in a sense, a bipedal, humanoid hyena, so the ear hair, looks unnatural, b) they need to look dumb, but not like Quasimodo, the hunchback thing is weird and awkward, it needs to look hyena like, so have their back straighter, but give them sloping shoulders, c) their knees do not ALWAYS have to be bent, they are humanoids, so give them something that says 'feral' without...

they are looking like to fight with a big, strong and hurtful group. they are looking like a green cavemen with structure of a dwarf and a cruel orc face.
the goblins that i know look more like to run away immidietly.
to sum up, i like this goblins, but they are looking like an half green caveorc half green cavedwarf.

Not really a fan of the goblin at the top. Seems a little too thick and stocky through the trunk. His eyes are dull, and the face reminds me more of a sleepy orc (savage, but tired and dull). The eyes should be sharper, more clever. The sloping forehead is good, but the wide underbitten jaw screams orc. I'd rather see a pointy chin, and a face broadest at the temples. Almost elfin, just ugly.
On the positives, I like the overall proportions. The almost monkey-like arms read well to...

This is such a tease! Talking about 5th level and backgrounds you didn't put in the playtest. I love the background/trait combination. It's been fun to test, and I can't wait till I have more to work with. The flexibility it will give is fantastic.
      July 12, 2012 2:34 PM PDT
I like the concept of Themes giving the ability to go off Class with abilities. But, one element with 4th Ed. that most of players didn't like was the All-In approach with Themes, Paragon Classes and Epic Destinies. Almost always, one or two of the powers or traits would be perfect, but the rest would just be wrong. As a result, most of the players in my 4th Ed games have customized themes and paragon paths. It seems that this is the going to be the case with Backgrounds and Themes. It seems...

My Profile

    About Me

About Me: Been playing D&D since I was about seventeen years old. I have to admit ,at the time, I was not happy Wizards acquired my game. I refused to play 3ed. I refused to play 3.5ed. Then when 4ed was coming out I bought the prerelease material and was excited to catch an edition from ground level and form an opinion based on experienced play. I do not like it. I've gotten to play 3.5 since then and have come to tolerate it. my 2ed books are suffering the wear and tear of play. and are increasingly hard to replace. I do like the High/Low method of play from 3 and 3.5. I don't dig the confirm crit rule so I just don't use it. In 4ed I see no reason for healing surges. It's silly. I also felt it was WAY more linear with respect to chatacter advancement.
Movies: Just about anything sci-fi fantasy. Conan 1 and 2, THe Princess Bride, Legend, The Hobbit, the recent Marvel movies. Blah blah blah. You know. The norm.
TV Shows: FIREFLY, Mythbusters, documentries of all sorts, Again the norm.
Books, Comics and Graphic Novels: Although I don't read very much I have read The Hobbit, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, R is for Rocket, The Zombie Survival Guide, and various rule books for D&D.
Music: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rory Gallagher, Planxty, Horslips, Skynard, Molly Hatchet, Pearl Jam, Silverchair, Tool Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters, Dead Sara, Five Finger Death Punch
      Wizard Book Lines:
      Other D&D
