ok so ive finally got my friends into D&D and i wanna get everything started but i have a question.
Would it be to taboo if i played as a player and DM?
I mean im kinda ok with just DMing but i would like to play eventually and i know my friends will never wanna DM. i brought this up at the game shop by my house and i got mixed answers. i know that gives me an advantage but i figured if i'd made sure i wasn't leading the group or wasnt making the checks nessesary to move the story in any direction and kept everything as if my player was as oblivious to everything as everyone else

Interesting question, I had a similar situation with my encounters group, someone took over as DM so that I could play but then he had to miss a couple of sessions due to work comittments, rather than weaken the party I fell back into DMing and also ran my pc but kept him as a more in the background type pc, letting the other party members make the tactical decisions but using Skrit (my kobold scout) to offer suggestions if needed.
So far it has worked well.
If your group has 5 or more players already I would try and hold off but if you have a smaller group you could run a pc to fulfil one of the missing roles and keep him/her to the rear of the decision making.
"Well that encounter was easy....er, guys, why is the DM grinning?" (party members last words) It's not a party till the screaming starts!

No problem mate, thats what these forums are all about. The best place to get advice that I have found is to ask other players/dm's.
I dont claim to know everything and I'm sure theres things I do wrong but I'm always happy to offer advice and help where I can (and I'm sure others are too).
