Hello all, I just recently started getting back into gaming (without a controller that is) and managed to convince some of the people I play MtG with to play D&D as well . I volunteered to DM as I have the most exerience role-playing/acting out of most of them. We should be starting sometime next week or the week after.

Now, for the first couple sessions we're just going to be using some pre-made adventures like what's included in the Red Box starter kit, etc but I am trying to piece together a home-brew for when they get the hang of role-playing and all the rules, etc. One problem that I have come to is how to reward them for doing certain tasks. How much gold is too much, or too little for a normal dungeon crawl? Is including a deity (which at the moment is plot crucial) that will provide them a wish at some point appropiate? That kind of rewards...Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bloodiron,

If you can get your hands on it, the Dungeon Masters Kit will be of great help for you.

Chapter 6 is all about Rewards, including encounter xp, quest rewards, and page 248 lists appropriate treasures per party level.

Including a diety as a type of patron is fine, though I'd hold off the wish till the party was a little higher, the diety could give other boons for them succesfully carrying out its wishes, extra healing, raising dead pc's, level appropriate magic items etc.

Though at the end of the day its you and your players campaign, if thats what you guys want to do and its fun then thats all that matters.

Vobeskhan, thank you for the advice. I will definately consider picking up a Dungeon Master's Kit as soon as I can. Just a quick question on the Monster Manual as well: I was reading through it and one thing stuck out at me. For the Lore section of the monsters, if one of my players make the check, do they get to know all the lore up to what they rolled? Ie if my player makes a Dungeoneering check for 26 on an aboleth, do they get to know just the second section, or the first and second. I'm leaning towards both, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks again for your advice.

Honestly its on the Level of the party. If you are a level ten party then you would give them roughly 100-200 gold each to spend on surplise and still have a little extra for something they want. Now for items that is tricky. You will have to work with the party level as well as the classes.
