Why we don't need another edition of D&D

While I agree with your opinion, the fact is that D&D has reached the point of being an established iconic product. There's a reason that the 2012 Ford Mustang looks like the 60s Mustang. People want a mustang to look like a mustang just as people want D&D to look like the D&D they remember from the 80s.
4e is the New Coke of RPGs. It doesn't matter how good 4e or 5e are. 5e doesn't need to be better then 4e, it just needs to similar to AD&D and have the same quirks and...

@wrecan - yup I imagine four smaller teams and a pack of cheerful die-hard freelancers for each design team.
@Hedgehobbit - Yet 5E is looking less and less like AD&D and more like a hot mess of a game designed by a committee. Why re-invent the game when you can cater to all 100% of your fan base by simply supporting products for all of them? We don't need a new system, we need content to play the systems we already own.

Also a player since 2nd ed, and 4e is my favorite for many reasons.
But as it relates to monsters, the 4e stat block is by far the best, and there is really no reason we can't have that style stat block along with a few good paragraphs of fluff.
As many other posters have said, the monster vault and threats to nentir vale books nailed this concept perfectly, just copy this format for Next and it's a done deal.

On board here! The monsters were the thing in 4th ed. that I liked most! But yeah, some monster ecology like in 2nd ed would bring the epic fantasy flavor back.

I know this is a long shot, since your comment is 5 months old at the time of my reply, but bounded accuracy essentially describes a paradigm shift in the "mathematical engine" that runs behind the scenes. In earlier editions there was this ever-escalating quasi-arms race between the PCs and the DM, with the PCs gaining ability bonuses and attack bonuses every level making it increasingly difficult for the DM to construct challenging encounters. The bounded accuracy system spaces out these...

Thanks for the input on this, PrestonSnow. Now it makes sense. And you nailed something I do to this day in 4E - "level-up" creatures so they are a challenge to the party.

Maybe. I find it hard to really tell, given how easy it is for people to be negative rather than constructive on the Internet. For example, it isn't uncommon for my buddies and I to spend a bunch of time saying things like "oh, can you believe how they did xyz" or "what were they thinking when they wrote abc" for any new sourcebook. But if you ask us whether we recommend it, we would all say yes. As Yoda says about the Dark side of the Force, going dark is faster, easier, more seductive, and...

I agree with Alphastream1. I think it is more often the case that those unhappy with something are the ones who post in the forums. So, the dominance of negativity, to me, is just an indication of that. Plus, I see the same people going back and forth over the same issues, which isn't really representative of any majority.

One thing about #6 that I find strange is the notion of "If the fighter can get close, the wizard's dead." That seems to be the angry old-school consensus, along with the related "If the wizard can keep the fighter at a distance, the fighter is dead." Whatever happened to "I ready my bow and shoot him in his eye"? Why should a fighter's ranged attacks be less deadly than his up close ones, if he is truly versatile (#4 above). I admit, I do love the idea of balance across classes so I never...

I actually totally agree a high level fighter should be able to hit a wizard with a bow attack, its just that on average arrows do less damage than heavy weapons since you don't get your str bonus unless you have a special bow, and this would mean it takes 3 or 4 rounds of arrows (whatever) to take down the wizard outright, giving the wizard hope of escape (teleport). I posted the earlier comment purely in response to #6 above suggesting that a high level fighter should be close to immune to a...

I just wanted to comment that I think this is brilliant design. It allows DMs the flexibility to allow players to be what they want to be, without having to shoe-horn in other classes, or force them to feel like they aren't able to be as successful in what they want by making them deal with cross-class skill restrictions. At the same time, you have an "easy out" as the DM by either forcing class based backgrounds and themes or iliminating them completely. Brilliant work so far, can't wait to see...

The party background concept makes my spine tingle too. I love it when my party cooperates well and have things in common. It inspired me wildly as a DM.

What I'm worried about is an over nostalgic glorification of non-grid play. That's why I refer to the example; it seems to gloss over the kinds of issues that can arise. The article makes mention of advantages and disadvantages existing for different modes of play, but I think the disadvantages of "TotM" are being downplayed. The supposed disadvantages of gridded play are currently at the forefront of everyone's minds, so "TotM" is riding on a wave of rather misplaced nostalgia.
      I go...

Bruce does mention some of the issues with theater of the mind (and even points out that issues of both are too complex/many to go into in great detail in the article), but I think your blog offers a good peak and some insight into what most of us have probably experienced at one point or another. I don't think Bruce is trying to pretend those problems didn't exist, but I got the feeling he didn't want to rip either system a new one.
My bit about them not throwing gridless away was mostly...
