History

Dwarves were created by Moradin but then abandoned as he turned to other acts of creation. During this time they were enslaved by the Giants and their masters the Primordials which Dwarven sages refer to as the Age of Strife. During this time of enslavement many Dwarves took on elemental aspects most numerous are the stone like Galeb Duhr, the fiery Azer, and the primordial cold fused Eisk Jaat. Even the race of dwarves that escaped unharmed carry traces of this elemental legacy and are known as the Forgeborn. When they finally overthrew their bondage they quickly resumed the worship of Moradin and established cities both on the surface of the world and in the Shallows of the underdark. Those who took refuge in the Underdark however were besieged by abominations. Those that fell to the power of the monstrosities of the Far Realm became the Derro while others in fear turned to the service of Asmodeus and became the Duergar. Meanwhile Dwarves enslaved by the Drow of the Deeps were crossbred with humans to create the Muls.

Dwarves of the Nentir Vale

While some dwarves live in Fallcrest, the largest population of Dwarves live in Hammerfast a prosperous trading town to the East of the Vale. It lies along the longer trade route to the Dawnforge Mountains.

Dwarves beyond the Vale

Many dwarves live in the Dawnforge mountains. The largest settlement is known as Mithralfast which serves as the seat of the current Nerathi league. There are also several communities throughout the shallows of the Underdark. The Broken Lands to the south of the Karkothi Throneholds is home to Dwarves who worship the primal spirits.
