In my previous entry I observed that certain famous names in Faerûn were wrong because the elements were in the wrong order (e.g. Waterdeep) or were not valid place names at all (e.g. Feywild, Shadowfell, Neverwinter). There was another anomaly I meant to mention. One of the famous titles in D&D is Keep on the Borderlands1 and, as I realised a few days ago, it’s also wrong. The keep is the central part of a castle, but not the fortification itself. It would have been better to use castle, fort, fortress, citadel, redoubt, or tower. [Tally ho, Mr Picky! –ed.] The better famous title is “Expedition to…” Thus “Expedition to Castle Shadowfell” would be better, I think, than Keep on the Shadowfell with its keep and unnecessary definite article. ... |
