What is MPFG?

Simply put, MPFG is Magic Puzzles, Fun, and Games. It's a place where fans of Magic can gather to play games based upon the RPG they love ever so much. Feel free to join in any existing game or even create one of your own at any time.

I'm new here, and I could really use a bit of guidance. Can you help?

Starting out? No problem. My suggestion is to jump in head first. Most of the game's rules are posted on the first page of the their respective threads. Obey the rules and you should be fine. If you have questions about how to play a game you can consult the rules of that game and this thread; if you don't find the answers there you can either ask general forum questions here, or else email one of the current GMs.

What is this "MPFG Season" I keep hearing about?

MPFG follows a four month on season followed by a 2 month off season. During the off season points will not be tallied and games are played merely for fun. In past off seasons, traffic has been low, so if you wish to experiment with new games, this would probably be the best time to do so.

Additionally if there is a game you wish to partake in and it is seemingly abandoned, feel free to take over the thread and bring it from the brink of death.

The Season Schedule:
January - February: Off Season
March - June: On Season
July - August: Off Season
September - December: On Season

What is registration, and how do I do so?

Registration is being implemented in MPFG so that needless tallying is eliminated when people post merely a couple of posts, or post on previously moved threads. Registration will open prior to the beginning of the season and last until the there are four weeks remaining in the season. If you wish to register, merely post your desire to be registered in the registration thread, which is stickied at the top of the forum while registrations are open. (If it's currently the off-season, registrations may be closed and the thread may not be there.)

If you take home the title during an MPFG season, not only will you get bragging rights, but you will also be rewarded with a custom title proclaiming your victory. All champions will be listed in this thread under the Former Champions section as well.

What about Spam? Can we spam here in MPFG?

Spam will not be tolerated in MPFG. While The Crown & Bull (Sometimes called The Queen & Bull) has been created solely for discussion on the games of MPFG, it often branches into other issues. If there's something you want to bring up that's off-topic, go to the C&B. While some topics are lax in their operations, that does not give the okay to spam any thread within MPFG's borders. Spam is a violation of the CoC and will be treated as such. Any threads that are considered heavily spammed will be closed, and any poster who is considered a chronic spammer will be removed from the competition.

Can I host or play in an RPG here?

Yes, Role Playing Games are allowed here in MPFG. So if you are shunned from Terisia, or wherever you may be from, and still want to run your game, feel free to post your RPG here.

What is a GM?

A Game Master (commonly abbreviated as GM) is simply a regular poster who 'runs' a forum, in this case, Magic Puzzles, Fun, and Games! In no way should they be considered a WizO, ORC, Admin, Moderator, 'sub-WizO', 'sub-ORC', 'sub-Admin' etc. The GMs are here to act as guides should you have any questions, to make sure the forum runs smoothly, and to help with any game ideas you have.

If you're unsure if a game is supposed to be in MPFG, or if you just want feedback from another poster, feel free to contact one of the GMs.

The Gamemasters:

Spoiler: Show

Qwyrxian

Qwyrxian agreed to become GM during MPFG's lowest point in the history of MPFG, he is our last hope for a revival of activity, thus earning him the title "Bearer of Hope" at least he's earned it as far as I (Wolfpack) am concerned.

Note: "Please note that I tend to be active on MPFG primarily on weekdays,  Japan time.  So if I don't get back to you right away on the weekends,  apologies, but I promise I'll respond as soon as I can!" - Qwyrxian.

Wolfpack

Wolfpack, the Tireless Champion. After winning three straight seasons in a row on the back of his tireless dedication and unceasing addiction to contest hosting, it was decided to make him a GM so he couldn't hog the podium any more. Rarely available right now due to personal life getting in the way, you might wish to direct any concerns you have to Qwyrxian or risk it being a long while before he can get back to you.

Zammm

Zammm is no longer an active GM here in MPFG, however he is going to keep his GM title and remain an Honorary GM. GM business in MPFG should be directed to another GM if possible.

Zammm, the Puzzle Master. Here from near the beginning and a master of mind-numbing puzzles Zammm is a true MPFGer through and through, but seldom seen except when hosting his fiendish puzzles. To this day, no one knows what "zammm" stands for... He's finally revealed the secret, but I'm not going to repeat it here, it's out there in magic general (02/27/10) for those who want to seek it out

Credits go to JayDreven for drawing up the original draft and Zammm for the formatting, and Wolfpack for the redesign after the Forums Migration.

Former Game Masters

Spoiler: Show

BDD
-
BlackDiamondDragon. BDD is the self proclaimed "Lord of the Board". Which makes a little sense as he is the creator of MPFG and runs the show when he's around. He demands the respect equal to that given to a WizO, so please, humor him.

PK
-
Periwinkle Knight. PK was one of the first Mods of MPFG. While he has lost his Modship (and no I won't say how) he still holds a lot of weight around here as such you should take heed when the man speaks.

Duskyblue
-
Former Game Master. Dusky retired her GM title at the end of Season III. As with all other former employees here at MPFG, when she speaks, you should listen up and listen good.

MonarchzMan
-
MM was a tried and true GM till the very end, when school and chickens claimed his life. Monarch remains MIA to this day, hopefully to one day return to perhaps pick up where he left off.

JayDreven
-
El blanco diablo. Here since day one, The Beast has earned his rep not through his victory's on the battlefield of MPFG, but through his fierce determination and aggressive tendencies. While tamer in his elder MPFG years, The Beast is still a great source of knowledge in the workings of MPFG. If you have questions, feel free to ask him if a GM is unreachable.

the sengir vampire
-
Game Master the Kid. The youngest GM in MPFG to date, Sengir has shown tremendous heart in multiple seasons before and has stepped up to put forth that same heart towards leading MFPG in seasons to come. Unfortunately, he went the same way as MonarchzMan shortly after his ascension to GM, never to be heard from again.

Mistform Dragon
-
Old Man MiDra. One of the longest-running GMs, MiDra has been around long enough to see, heck, experience most of MPFG's history. He's still hanging around, so if you have the chance, go say hi and tell him to get his ass back here in the GM seat where he belongs.

PariahKing
-
The other PK. Myth holds that he was once a GM here, but he has faded into obscurity, possibly because he never sent that Zammm guy (who he thinks is kind of a jerk but who is actually awesome incarnate) a blurb to use to describe him here. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Skyhunter
-
The Cookie Monster. A great guy, he's been here for years, and there hasn't been a day where he hasn't been seen in MPFG. As a GM he was easy to handle; if he got angry, you could just throw him a chocolate chip cookie to get him on your good side again. He has now stepped down that he might go off in search of The Ultimate Cookie.

Former Champions

Spoiler: Show

Ledrawn - Ledrawn is the winner of the first season of MPFG, a title that makes him deserve a place in the MPFG Hall of Fame. Champion of Season I.

Boy - The unofficial advertiser. Boy originally sported the MPFG fish in his sig, although speculation runs high as to whether the link was supposed to be a fish or not. Boy claimed victory in the second season of MPFG, becoming champion of Season II. With his victory, the MPFG fish was breathed with new life...

Shashakiro - Shash claimed the title in the third season of MPFG after a monster come from behind victory over taking an over hundred point lead to obtain the lead. He truly is the Come-back Kid.

Ketchupboy - KB dominated season four unmercifully. Despite point breaks designed to level the playing field KB still managed to dominate the competition up until he took the last month or so off and pulled out a idle victory.

Mistform Dragon - In a point system based solely on dedication and determination, one never before seen in MPFG, MiDra went the distance and showed that he was truly dedicated to becoming Season V's MPFG Champion.

Chartreuse_Lotus – Season VI was all about bringing change and good things to MPFG and C_L reigned supreme with his countless hours of effort coordinating games and making newer players feel right at home.

AjaxUD - Proving that season victories can't always be a certainty, AjaxUD came in part way through the season and cruised to a victory, showing the insane posting habits that made MPFG a great place.

Rhox - Season VIII will be remembered as the birth of one of MPFG's greatest rivalries. Rhox looked like he had the season clinched firmly in the palm of his hand as things went underway, but the arrival of theUntouchable1 shook things up midway through the season. In the end, TU1 gave Rhox a run for his money, but Rhox's sheer persistence and aggressive-style posting earned him the crown.

TU1 - Season IX was TU1's chance to even the score on his rival as Rhox was away for much of the season. The defending champion ended up sixth, leaving the door wide open for TU1. He surpassed his competitors (mainly MT_Gunn) and won the championship with a convincing lead reminiscent of early seasons.

Wolfpack - MPFG's first ever double-season winner, Wolfpack dominated both Season X and Season XI thanks to an indomitable will, an incredible dedication to MPFG, and way, way too much free time, which he used both to participate in the games of others and host an incredible number of games himself. He then proved his dominance by doing the same thing in Season XII, after which it was decided he should be made a GM, if only to stop him from continuing the streak.

Cloudpost - The silent one, Cloudpost disappeared immediately following the season (hope we see him return), Cloudpost narrowly managed to pull into the lead towards the end of the season after a season long neck and neck and neck race with his two closest competitors Qwyrxian and silasw, with great amount of scowling from the previous champion (ie. me) I congratulate him on winning Season XIII.

tgva8889 - With one great final push in the last month tgva8889 caught up to the leader at the time and quickly left his competition in the dust as he took a commanding lead, further improved by his excellent standings in many of the seasons games, there was no doubt why he became Season XIV Champion.

Qwyrxian - Even though the forum change over made many people upset and leave the boards, there was still enough players to give Qwyrxian a run for the championship, Q however wouldn't stand for a close finish and had to dominate everyone through sheer activity, taking a lead reminiscent of the days when Wolfpack was Champion. There was no doubt why Q became Season XV hampion. During Season XVI Qwyrxian again took the championship against a smaller but no less competitive turn out.

Autocarding, symbols, and semi-standard format for board position.

to autocard:
Type [c] before a card name, and [/c] after the card name.
Example: [c]Grizzly Bears[/c] = Grizzly Bears

To display the tapped symbol:
Type a t between two :'s
Example: :t: =

To display mana symbols: (Singular)
Colored symbols: type the appropriate letter for the given color between two :'s
Examples:
:r: =
:g: =
:w: =
:u: =
:b: =

Hybrid Symbols: Type the appropriate color combination (using the letters as defined above) after "sym" (without the quotations) and put it all between two :'s
Examples:
:symub: = :symub:
:symrw: = :symrw:
:symgr: = :symgr:
etc.

Numeric colorless symbols: Type the appropriate number (between 1 and 16) followed by mana between two :'s
Example: :3mana: = :3mana:

Snow symbol: Type snow between two :'s
Example: :snow: =

Alternate means:
instead of using :'s you can instead use the [mc ] tags, in this way you can add the whole CMC between the tags and not have to code each one individually. just remove the space's from the example here to get the actual tags.
Example: [mc ]3ub[/mc ] =

Board Position formatting:

In order to keep things relatively consistent and clean we like to have clear board positions and turn information, an example of one is below.

I will be announcing this now, I am only going to be running one or two new games this season. If anyone wishes to run 3CM I'm sure the community will be grateful. I intend to  run my carry-over games from last season through completion (As well as participate in a few new ones). I have personal reasons for this and they are unavoidable. I'll still be very active I just doubt I can devote the kind of time I used to be able to.

(Also Zammm has told me he is making us a real Avatar to replace the quickly made one I loaded so that MPFG would actually have one) - Yay Zammm came through for us.

Okay, I don't know if I just don't understand the layout of the new community.  But since MPFG will now be a group rather than a forum, doesn't that make it far far harder for new people to find our location?  I mean, the number of groups is already growing, and should grow far larger over time (since a group can be anything from "D&D fans" to "People I play Magic with in Fargo").  What do we need to do to continue to get new players, and, perhaps just as importantly, new hosts?

Or are we just going to have to face a slowly dwindling future?

Free Face-Vigging to all who apply!

Anyway, the more people you get to join your group the larger it will grow, but you have to work at it.

By my understanding they are going to fix the groups sorting situation eventually, including a section or sort option for wotc supported "official" groups so that finding us will be easy. I believe they are busy with the more important features at this time, and that they are waiting for us GM's to finish our discussion on our new policy regarding our new abilities.

Another thing is the social networking side of things, I hate to say it but that might actually help us find people, as we make friends with users in other parts of the forums we can invite them to see MPFG (Once it is back in action) and join us in various games. Although that doesn't help us find completely new strangers. In any case I'm going to propose that they replace one of the unwanted sections on the Featured page with a section devoted to the official groups. (Exact details to be figured out later of course, it's just a rough idea now.)

Yeah...I hate to sound defeatist or anti-change, but I know the social networking part won't work for me.  Everyone I know on the forums is from MPFG (maybe 1 or 2 from YMTC).  I know I won't be using that aspect of the site (I don't have Magic playing friends, and know that I can't find any in my area in any regard).  I like the idea of Official Groups, though, and I bet the social networking aspect will work well for many people.

I neglected to mention this before, but in regards to the M10 Sealed game running prior to the migration I am not planning on bringing it over to the new forums. The reason behind this is due to my time constraints, I had to make a decision this season, I am already running 3 carry-over games, plus I have 1-2 new games I want to run this season. However I know I won't have as much time this season to devote to everything I want to do. So out of the other things I could be doing (running M10 Sealed, running 3CM, or playing in a couple games) I had to choose what I really wanted to do. And since M10 sealed isn't a season game, and 3CM should easily find someone willing to host (Or if nobody steps in, I've had an idea about how to run it without as much work from the host.) I chose to play in a game or two so that I could have some fun this season.

I apologize to those of you that were playing in the M10 Sealed game.
