How about a system for creating and running your own stronghold, tower, church, thieves' guild? Maybe establish your own domain out in the wilderness?

My concern with this, as will all similar role-play situations like this in past editions, is having decent guidelines for how much various activities cost. How much do you pay a person to search for information for you. How much do you earn playing your lute at the local tavern. That kind of thing.

I am simultaneously learning 4e and Next rules, after 20 years since playing AD&D 1e. At first, I thought the high hit points and multiple healing surges of 4e was silly, but after considering all the ways things can wear someone down besides just gaping wounds, I am starting to buy into the idea. I still don't like the idea of complete recovery in one night, and in either system, I might add the possibility of sustaining a serious injury that can only be healed with magic or proper treatment...

I agree that starting hit points should be higher.
How about raw CON + class rather than CON mod + class for 1st level only?

Wow, I really like the part about DMs working with players to create their own subclasses that fit for their campaign and story. I also like the part about subclasses focusing on fluff and background, thus, the are things like Knight and not Defender (defender/slayer can be dealt with through feat and expertise dice maneuver selections). I like where subclasses are going!

4E edition was very Controller based, like confusing, slowing, stunning, dominating enemies and even going as far as scrambling their positions on the battlefield. The 4E Psion is a perfect example of how they are not the Wizard, even though they are both Controllers, and with augments (similar things already in the packet) I think they could easily stand on their own. Subroles could be Telepath, Kenetic, Shaper and maybe even Psychic Warrior, to roll them into a single class.

I'd DM it myself, but I want to "explore" the mines without knowing what is going to happen, and see if I can pull out my dungeon survival skills.
Of course, it's important for anyone who's looking for this type of game not to have a character concept they get attached to. Those work better in more story-driven scenarios.

Yeah, I agree. They are different types of games so I think if you kind of know what to expect when getting into it then it can be a lot of fun, and people should give it a go if they never played such a game. It seems like with DnDN, it is going in the direction to where a campaign can have this leathality factor dialed up or down. I would really like this to be the case as I also like a mix of this. Sort of a story driven campaign but, a "oh, by the way, the Tomb of Horrors is over here and...

My Profile

    About Me

About Me: I love me some D&D. I've played on and off since the early 80s. Mentzer BECMI is probably my favorite, but 4E is a close second. Essentials was much better than the haters would have you believe. D&DNext is off to a solid start and the new options look very interesting. Lets all just have fun in this amazing hobby ok?
Movies: I watch tons of movies and like pretty much all genres, even crappy B movies, maybe PARTICULARLY crappy B movies.

I could sit here and put Matrix and LOTR and Star Wars, but that's what everybody puts!
      TV Shows: Castle

      Fringe

      Chuck

      Historical Documentaries

      Revenge

      Modern Family

      Monk

      Veronica Mars

      Falling Skies
Books, Comics and Graphic Novels: Love Ludlum, Tolkien, GRR Martin, Jordan, Asprin, Pratchett,

I also like to read the rags that Wizards publishes and calls novels. I'm nerdy like that. Particularly the works of Tim Waggoner and Don Bassingthwaite. Keith Baker is also pretty good.
Music: Juno Reactor, Benassi, Chemical Brothers. Skrillex, Back Eyed Peas. DeadMau5, Gaetta, Infected Mushroom. Anything with good rhythm. I love the beat. And you'd be surprised how well it can work with D&D combat.
      Wizard Book Lines:
      Eberron
      Other D&D
      Hobbies: Playing with my kids

      Photography

      Guitar

      D&D

      Mountain Biking

      Movies/Books

      Video Games

      Weightlifting
      Likes: Pretty much everything.
Dislikes: People who don't like you just because you don't like what they like. People who mistake their opinion for fact.
      My Games:
      Dungeons & Dragons
Other Games I Play: I love reading RPG rulesets and trying new games. I will play D&D in any of its forms with a fond love of B/X, BECMI and AD&D (or more appropriately a mashup of all 3).

Because of that I've also been known to play some Hackmaster, and more recently, Castles and Crusades, which is an amazing ruleset that could teach WotC alot about what makes a great game. I've also been enjoying Adventurer Conqueror King System. If you've not heard of it, check it out. I just recently got my copy of The 13th Age and they do some really cool stuff in there. It's great to see what Rob Heinsoo can do when he doesn't have Hasbro trying to force him into designing a version of D&D that requires a bunch of extra purchases of minis and dungeon tiles. That's right, Rob ditched the grid completely in the game he is designing according to what he wants from a game. Imagine that.
