Hello Matt, I am a DM / Player for the past 30yrs..2/3rds of which I've been a DM. I must agree with you that much of the "Hack-n-Slash" is getting very old and such an experience is, for the most part is ignored for "fast game time" and to maintain player's. When I started D&D the DM I was under was a member of the RPGA, he would draft PC's so that they would be pitted against one another...Ultimately make 1 or 2 player's of a 6 man party being the bad guys. I am Not a Fan of the Monk alignment requirement or alignment requirements for classes in general.
Personally, I prefer giving players more options and do not like limiting an entire class to a specific alignment. I think alignment restrictions are fine for prestige classes which can be tied to a specific story or for classes in specific campaign settings where it is tied to story.
Also just to be clear, I am not a rules purist and will have no problem allowing my players to play...

I suppose I should clarify by play experience I meant my time on both sides of the DM screen, a tool I have mainly dropped except as a face up piece of cardboard on the table for ease of reference to certain charts.

I think your example of chess vs checkers itself shows how wrong you are.
Chess is a game in which there is no possible move that is not supported by the rules. It is the epitome of a game with rigid, pre-determined options. However, chess is lauded as one of the shining examples of a game that requires thought. Why is that so?
