Flip cards

Flip cards will be stripped down to the bare bones of the mechanic; no Legendary, no changing card types, no Tap abilities, etc. Each color will get two Flip cards, one common, one other, and the flip triggers will reward each color for doing what it wants to do. This is the best mechanic because it has visual impact, creates a fun mini-game for players to build decks around, can flip for big creatures that are in keeping with modern power levels, and tells a resonant story. To support the Flip Cards, each color will need a few more cards to support their various triggers.

UPDATE
Here's some info on Flip cards from Maro today, via Twitter:

maro254 Mark Rosewater 10:54 8/28/11Flip cards were wonderful in concept but horrible in execution. Design isn't just about functionality. Cards have to feel right. Flip cards are an example of head design in the extreme. Everything logically is there but it misses the spirit. The art was muddled and it was hard to get which side was active. The fact that you had to tap the cards only aggravated the issue. If you lead design by the head, players will enjoy the card list. If you lead design by the heart, people will enjoy the cards.

So maybe Flips aren't something WotC would ever bring back. Okay.
