Great Designer Search 2 Home Page

Welcome to the home of the second Great Designer Search on the Magic Wiki! Here, you'll find helpful links and guidelines for participating in the collaborative portion of the Great Designer Search 2.

How It Works

In the first Great Designer Search, the applicants were allowed no outside help. For the second Great Designer Search, participants are allowed to use any material they've produced themselves and anything posted on the Magic Wiki. This allows R&D to test their collaborative abilities as well as individual design abilities.

Later in the process, remaining applicants will be asked to propose mechanics and flavor for a Magic block/world. For the eight participants in the "show" portion of the search, the block/world each one proposed will be the setting and context for his or her subsequent design challenges. This is a change from the original GDS, in which challenges had no continuity between them.

The individual portion of the Search does not begin until the essay questions and Official Rules are posted. Not everyone is eligible to take part in the GDS2, and not everyone who takes part will remain in contention. By contrast, the collaborative portion of the Search here on the Wiki begins immediately and is open to all members of the Wizards Community.

Potential applicants and anyone else who's interested in Magic design are strongly encouraged to begin working on their block/world design immediately here on the Wiki.

What You Should Do

  • Browse others' ideas and contribute to them by heading to the World Design Hub page.
  • Share your ideas for block/world designs by creating a new Wiki page containing information about your world design and adding a link to it to the World Design Hub page.
  • Contribute to as many different world designs as you want, whether you plan to participate in the individual portion of the GDS2 or not. There are no restrictions on who can create a world design page or on how many different world design pages you can create and contribute to.
  • Expect contributions from other users. Wikis are collaborative by nature, and by posting your idea to the Wiki, you can benefit from the insights and ideas of other users and strengthen your design. If you don't want to collaborate on your idea, don't put it on the Wiki—but bear in mind that only design ideas from the Wiki and from the applicants themselves are permissible in the individual portion of the Search.
