As we have mentioned in the past, we keep track of the play activity of the various formats on Magic Online, whether Core or Specialty. As part of this it has been our policy to provide popular (i.e. often played) Specialty formats with tournament support.
Unfortunately, the Vanguard format has been being played less and less this last year. This has led us to decide to try another new format in its place. This format is code named "Standardton".
Around the launch of Zendikar we will stop all tournament support for the Vanguard format. You will still be able to play this format in casual play of course. As part of this change the avatars that will be given out for the ME3 Release events will NOT contain any Vanguard rules text. They will be new pieces of avatar art but they will not provide a Vanguard format card.
After working with R&D over the last few months, we have decided that we would like to introduce a Standard based 60-card Singleton format in its place. This format will incorporate the usual 15-card sideboard as well.
We are looking for a good name for this format though that will clearly help explain the essence of it (just as we did with Kaleidoscope). The best name we have come up with so far is Standardton but we'd like to see if you can come up with something better. I will start a forum thread here in this group for suggestions and name discussions. After we get some good suggestions we will set up a poll so you can help decide what this new Specialty format should be called.
And as usual, we are constantly reviewing play patterns and metrics in order to offer tournament support and programs for the formats you want to see supported. Perhaps in the future Vanguard of Prismatic will return. Your level of excitement and support for a format can make the difference!
