Hyrule is a blessed land. Though much of the northern areas of the southern continent is wasteland and desert, the land of Hyrule is known for it's fertility. According to legend, three goddesses came down from the heavens, shaped the land of Hyrule and gave it life. Then when they left a remainder of they're power was left in the land of Hyrule. This force is called the Triforce and it is believed to be the source of Hyrule's prosperity.
Elves once ruled Hyrule, it being the most northerly territory of the high elf empire and home to the wild elves before that. The high elves discovered the Triforce and they're priests and mages studied it. Then they discovered that among them had been born three oracles, given the power and wisdom of the three goddesses themselves. They took the name of the three goddesses, Nayru, Farore and Din. They taught the elves of they're namesakes and the elves built great temples to honor the deties. Over the site where they found the Triforce they built the greatest Temple of them all, the Temple of Light.
However, the elves empire did not last forever. Goblin hordes raged against the elven lands, conquering much territory. Hyrule did not fall, however the elven population dwindled as they left for the south, and a few to the north. Eventually, human settlers came to the land. They fought the goblins and allied with the elves. Over time they interbred with the elves. Thus the realm of Hyrule was ruled by half-elves. There where two main tribes of these half-elves, the Hylians descended primarily from high elves, and the Sheikah descended from wild elves. Eventually the Hylians sought to re-unify Hyrule and entered into alliance with the Sheikah, and a third tribe from outside of Hyrule, humans called the Gerudo, unusual in that they're tribe had very few men. When they breed with non-Gerudo men, the men were usually not Gerudo. Some say this is because of a curse placed on the Gerudo long ago. Nonetheless, a Gerudo is born approximately once a century. This man is supposedly destined for greatness and often becomes leader of the Gerudo. These tribes defeated those who stood in they're way and the first Prince of Hyrule was crowned, the monarch choosing not to take the title of King. Each of the three tribes dedicated themselves to a patron deity. Each tribe also has different duties in the governance of Hyrule, for instance the Hylians are the rulers and nobility, the Sheikah are devoted to law enforcement and intelligence gathering and the Sheikah and Gerudo make up the officers and elite troops of the army.
The current situation in Hyrule is grim. Undead from the fallen Kingdom of Ikana have begun to stir. It seems that the rulers of that land seek revenge for they're destruction by the Hylians ages ago. Goblins from the wastes have banded together to attack Hyrule as well. Unbeknown to most is that these events are connected. If you've ever played a Legend of Zelda game you can probably guess who is behind this. Ganondorf seeks to take the throne of Hyrule but for now pretends to be a loyal servant of Princess Zelda.
