Akanul is one of the most fantastic areas in the world, but the regions' adventures really don't reflect that at all. I blame too much low heroic tier content and none in paragon, where the otherworldly nature of the region could be better emphasized. Are there any plans to address this and put out additional content for Akanul?

(On the other hand, CALI's gone quite well.)

Yeah, LFR as a whole is pretty much dead since 5th edition looming ever so closer with each passing month

Obviously opinions will vary about any particular region/story area.  I think maybe a couple of factors combined to limit much unique local flavor in Akanul.  First, it was a "new" realm in the 4e Forgotten Realms. Unlike many of the regions, it did not have a wealth of pre-4e material. As it was so fantastic, traditional stories of sword and sorcery might not have served it as well as for other locations. Second, in the early days of LFR (basically the first two years), we had a strong vector from WotC to keep the adventure emphasis on straight D&D, don't make the setting center stage and don't require the players to learn/understand a lot of FR lore.  IMHO, the Writing Director for Akanul took that to heart. By the time LFR was revised to introduce a lot more story emphasis, Calisham was added and it had a lot of existing lore, with some updates.  So a comparison of the two reflects the different directions and existing lore at the time.

Just my 2 cents.
