It's been a little over 3 years since I last played LFR, and on a whim signed up for a local game this weekend that was hurting for players while everyone is at GenCon. I sat down to see what I need to do to get up to date and have been getting fairly confused. It seems like a lot has changed in the past few years, but not all of it has been documented clearly? A couple questions that have come up:
- The list of stuff states a Rules Compendium is required for players, which is new. Last time I played it hadn't been published yetused just used the PHB. What is in the Rules Compendium that overrides or adds to the old PHB, especially since the PHB still seems to be in print?
- My first stop was the LFR campaign guidelines. The latest I could find was a draft of 2.5, but they say they went into effect a year ago. The draft references a January 2012 version I can't find. What are the current campaign guidelines, and where can I find them?
- Not a strictly LFR question, but I went through the latest errata trying to find any changes that affected my old Warlock. There are a couple places where the errata states "damage has been increased" or "wording has been clarified" in relevant powers without actually saying what the change is. How can I find what the relevant changes are, short of buying a new printing of the PHB?
Any help would be appreciated. The info I've found so far is not making me excited about getting back into LFR, but I hope I'm just missing something major.

Rules Compendium just clarifies things for the most part. There are some differences, but most of the specifics are just ask. You can find the LFR campaign guidelines here. You can find the Rules Updates here.

Unfortunatly those sites seem to be the cause of my conusion. The LFR site is the one that houses the 2.5 "draft" I found that references the nonexistant January 2012 guidelines.
The 2/2012 rules update is the one that contains the very un-helpful:

Page 132: This power's language has been clarified.
and

Page 133: This power's damage has been increased.
I'm trying to find out what it's been increased to, and how the language has been clarified. In its current state those particular bits of errata seem kinda useless. I tried to do my due dilligence finding the latest sources. but the current situation seems... frustrating.

Do you have a DDI subscription? If you do, just go in the Compendium or the Character Builder and look up your powers. Whatever is listed is the most recent version of the power. (Yes, there is a narrow corner case when an update is made -- it takes up to a month to be reflected in the DDI tools. But don't worry about that.) Also look into picking a theme for your character. I recently updated my year 1 LFR characters that I had mothballed and needed to add themes to all but one of them. Themes give you bonuses to some skills, an encounter power, and extra abilities and powers up to 10 level.

You dont HAVE to take a theme but you may now do so so long as it is from a legal source (Dark Sun and ebberon themes from dragon or DSCS are not allowed but themes from Heroes of Shadow, Heroes of the Feywild the Neverwinter and elemental Chaos books are allowed. You also cant be a masked lord of waterdeep. (at least until you get the appropriate campaign creditation.)
Personally I'd leave it tfor now and ask your group for their suggestions on a theme (unless you are all returning to LFR after a 3 year absence)

That link will take you to where you can download the warlock playtest update. Which is what the errata is refering to. Very piss poor job by WotC to support the non-DDI users when it comes to some of the errata.

This should help you going foward - Go to DnD's "Home Page" - www.wizards.com/DnD/Daily.aspxYou'll see "Rules Updates" on the right side under quick links. From there click the link that says "Rules Update Archive" Under the list of 4th Edition updates you can see all the individual book updates and when last update. Presumably you can go the specific book and see the most recent versions. I just download the "Complied Rules Update" and within that file are all the updates sorted by Book / Magazine. These compiled updates are available to everyone and no DDI subscription is needed.

I think this post just highlights how confusing things can be for someone who's just taken some time away from the campaign. It'd be even worse for a potential brand new player.
